Well that can be a long list... here goes though:

Water

Dehydrated food

Cooking utensils (I just bring a small pot/cup and a spork personally)

Stove

Sleeping bag

Tent (two pound, two person from Big 5)

550 paracord

2 tarps

Katadyn base camp filter

Sunshade for camping pad

Multi-tool

Compass

Map

Lighter & matches

Water purifying tablets

I'm sure I'm leaving a few things off, but those are several of the basics

My SO and I did a nobo this year. We had one stove and two cups. We started with a pot, which I think was 1.3 liters, and sent it home in Neels Gap cause it was heavy and we never used it.

I would change out the glass bottles for double bagged zip lock bags. The last thing you want is to have shards of glass spread through your bag and to lose your your food. you should also consider switching out your food for something like [this] (http://www.amazon.com/Mayday-Food-Bar-400-Calories/dp/B0095ZMONW/ref=pd_sbs_sg_16), taste ok and very low weight/space per calorie. You should also look into some sort of small cook pot like [this] (http://www.amazon.com/Olicamp-330441-Space-Saver-Cup/dp/B001ODH4O2/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1371545953&sr=8-2&keywords=cooking+cup), you need something to boil water in. just a few ideas, good start though.

Wow, That cooking set looks absolutely amazing.

I saw that $58 price tag and was a bit put off (as I was looking for cheaper starting stuff) but after going through the contents and seeing what I could remove from the amazon shopping cart It really doesn't seem that bad.

With the items mentioned in the original post I also added this and this the total came out to $65 on amazon.

After removing the stuff included the kit and having the tarp, knife, and paracord it is about $35. With the kit its puts the total up to about $95.

Considering this is about a $30 increase but with all the extra kit it really does seem tempting.

ThirstyOne is correct. $20. I bring mine on short hikes and leave it in the truck day to day. And this fits inside with the nalgene. The only thing i didn't like about it is that it flops around a bit when fitted to a belt or backpack. I use a shoulder strap now.

Ok cool, sounds like you have the skills to backup the gear. Like I said, I just don't want people to assume that buying "stuff" makes them prepared.

This mug looks pretty good for $9. Single-walled stainless so you can heat liquids in it. It's apparently Made in China, just like the rest of the world. Ideally I would want surgical stainless, Made in USA... but sometimes you get what you get.

You could also do something like this that will fit perfectly on the bottom of a 32 oz Nalgene. Collapsible handles and Made in India, I think.

I imagine you've done the math on this, but walking from one coast to the other will you take something like 3 months.

I have another question - why shotgun and not a carbine (AR)?

Disadvantages for a shotgun to me are:

  • Heavier and bulkier ammo per shot

  • Slower follow up shots (for me at least with a pump)

  • Less range

  • Usually heavier weapon

  • Slower reloads

  • Less shots before a reload.

    Advantages would be:

  • Ammo versatility

  • Pattern / close range devastation

  • Easier to hit something moving (bird / small game)

  • Dependability / simplicity

  • Cost

Take it to a boil in a metal device, and then let it cool a bit. You can rehydrate in anything, even freezer bags.

Personally, I like a nice stainless steel cup. 2 of them usually covers any dehydrated or freeze dried meal, they can be left to warm on rocks near a fire, they double as tea/coffee service, and you can cook in them if you like.

These also fit on the bottom of most kleen canteens/nalgene bottles, which makes them handy.

How about a survival starter kit? I like to get a one-quart widemouth Nalgene bottle, a steel cup that fits around the base of the bottle for cooking, and a bottle bag to carry it in. In an emergency, you can take out the bottle and empty its contents into the bottle bag for carry while having a bottle for water.

For my friends I add something like a Survivor HK-106 series fixed blade knife with fire starter; it's not a top-quality bushcraft knife and I typically have to spend some time with it and a sharpening stone, but it is rugged, full-tang, stainless steel, and will get those bushcraft jobs done; I use it over others (such as the Mora, which I use in other applications) because it fits inside the bottle, the sheath fits too (though they don't fit when sheathed), and it's a good value.

You should easily be able to get all this plus a water filter or purification tablets and have budget for a few more items if you like. I usually leave it at this and let the recipient Google "water bottle survival kit" and finish customizing the kit--there's plenty of room left.

This one year an ex of mine gave me some shitty gifts. We were dating for a couple years at this point and he was never too good at giving me anything that you would say was particularly thoughtful but this year I was excited. We had moved in together about 6 months earlier and he had told me a couple of things he had seen around but didn't get me because they weren't good enough (most of which we expensive jewelry related things) and he wanted to get me the perfect gift. On this birthday he had to work so I decided to make a girls day out of it with some friends, getting haircuts, manicures, etc. By the time I got home at our shared apartment he had already called me to tell me he was going to have to stay late at work because of his asshole boss that he had been telling me about for months but not to worry. I ended up falling asleep early thinking he was going to wake me up in an hour or two only to be woken up at 4 am by my phone ringing off the hook. I was obviously extremely confused but answered to hear him tell me that he had been arrested on a bullshit charge but I needed to come down immediately and bail him out. The entire way there I was panicked trying to figure out why my boyfriend of 4 years had been arrested and how this was the worst b-day gift. It was probably something stupid and I felt terrible that he had most likely been on his way home from work hours before when the incident must have happened and he had most likely been sitting in jail since then waiting to call me. I was blaming myself that maybe if I would've stayed awake and tried called his phone then maybe an officer would have answered telling me where he was and I could've done something to help. I finally get there and hear the officer tell me he was arrested for driving with a suspended license (something I did not know he had) and they had also impounded his car. The entire ride home he was telling me that he was pulled over right after leaving his job for no reason the cop told him that his windows were tinted too dark and that his license wasn't really suspended but it was a clerical error but we'd have to figure it out in the morning. Okay so we get home after a very long night and he says that thankfully he was allowed to take a few items out his car before they had it towed luckily he was able to get my birthday present out. So I'm thinking at least something good will come out of today. I open a small box to find one of those reed diffuser sets that he thought I'd want to help decorate our apartment. After a "thanks" he goes "here they let me take your wallet out of my car" and I'm thinking it's a joke because I don't recognize the pink wristlet that he was handing me. For a second I kept thinking that I was dumb and the reed diffuser was a gag gift and now my real gift is this wristlet with perhaps something inside. So I'm smiling wide like a dumbass as I tear this wristlet open only to see someone used makeup. I'm still a little confused and I go "I don't get it, this isn't mine". He turned completely red and got silent and I guess it kind of clicked for me. After an argument he admitted that his "psycho ex" had gotten a job working with him according to him so she could "stalk him". Now from my experience in our relationship this girl was kind of psycho because she had been starting trouble since we started dating and even went as far as to leave notes on our cars like a high schooler. He told me she had corned her at his car a couple of nights earlier, asked to talk and mostly apologize for the problems she had caused us, and he 'stupidly' let her sit in the car while they were talking because it started to rain. He said he wouldn't put it past her to leave her wristlet in there on purpose to start more trouble and even went as far as to say she was the one who called to cops on him and that's why he got pulled over etc. All of this didn't make sense to me so I called bullshit which led to another argument where he was just plain trying to hurt me and told me that she did indeed get a job with him and all those times he told me about his "asshole boss" making him stay late it was just them hanging out together, the weekend trip he took for work (which I had to bail out on at the last second) was how they got back together, and they were hanging out when he got arrested. Needless to say I started packing my shit immediately and had to call my mom to help me move out which was extremely embarrassing.

tl;dr: my boyfriend of 4+ years ended up getting arrested on my birthday, my gift turned out to be a reed diffuser (basically a glorified air freshener), ended up finding out all in the same situation that he had been cheating on me, and had to move out of our apartment.

If I happen to win this contest I would really like this however it's $10.95 with free shipping with prime but if that's too much I'd equally love this.
