Under $15:

  • Calligraphy Marker - Good for people VERY new to calligraphy, easy to use, won't make amazing compositions.

  • Pilot Parallel Pens - Good balance of looking/acting like an expensive pen and easy to use. If you get one of these, I would recommend the 3.8mm because the large size helps in learning the forms of each hand.

    Under $30:

  • Speedball Dip Nibs/holders - This package has a diverse collection of nibs, which means many different sizes for about the price of a single parallel pen. Downsides include more maintaining/cleaning of each nib, unlike the almost maintenance-free parallel pen. Also, you will need to buy ink separately. Some good ink I've just gotten is parker.

I just invested in some brush pens and I'm having a ton of fun with with [this] (https://www.amazon.com/Speedball-Calligraphy-No-5-Artists-Project/dp/B001QWUHF4/ref=sr_1_6?ie=UTF8&qid=1494251696&sr=8-6&keywords=calligraphy+pen+speedball) . I'm getting better with it, but it's terrifying that I might ruin something I've spent hours on with a sinngle drip .

I am penpals with someone who frequents this sub and asked him this very question in my last letter. He recommended the Pilot Parallel Pen with the 2.4mm ($8.61) or 3.8mm ($9.65) nib as a good place to start if I didn't want to go the dip pen and ink route. For the dip pen and ink route, he suggested the Speedball Calligraphy No. 5 Artist Set ($9.16) and some Noodler's Ink (as low as $12.50 on Amazon).

Best of luck! What a great gift!

This Speedball kit is quite nice if you wish to go the dip-pen route. From what I've seen, it's the most stocked dip pen starter set at any art store, at least in Canada. There's also a Mitchells set floating around somewhere, and while the nibs are better quality and square cut, it can be harder to find and is more expensive.

With those, pick out essentially any kind of ink and off you go!

Have fun! I look forward to your results.

This calligraphy pen! I'm trying to do an artsy piece with a lot of writing involved, so it'd be great.

I'm an amazingly crafty turtle !

Thanks for the contest! :)

Ok, so I like to paint. In January I did a blacklight kitty mural for my daughter in her room for her birthday. and years ago I did custom art on pottery for people in a pottery studio (think of it as one of those paint your own pottery places, only you could paint, or you could hire me and I'd paint for you.) here is a gallery of many of the pieces I did there.

I love using color to create and make something bland into something amazing. I guess it's like bring life to a piece. I love precision and patience and can sit and paint a piece of pottery for 8 hours straight.

I started painted to help cure my binge eating in front of the tv addiction. (and it has since turned into a nail "art" addiction!)

Here's a wonderful glow in the dark mani that makes me giggle, I picked it because of the blacklight mural I did for my daughter, and she loves [Despicable Me!] (http://media-cache-ak0.pinimg.com/736x/fa/70/67/fa7067d11a1676add997868ea9b908f9.jpg)

If I were to win, I'll tell you what I want to try my hand at next, and that's calligraphy. I've been eying several different calligraphy kits on Amazon and really want to learn how to do it. I have the steady hand that I think will translate into calligraphy well. I don't know much about it all, but I know I need a pen/holder and different "tips" to produce different results, and their are also books that show different styles, but I saw a link to a great one online.

and hmmm, I've been really drooling over some of that Trap-eze glitter polishes that people have done. because: glitter.

Hey there! I'm pretty new at this too! I've been lurking the internet trying to find stuff too haha. If you're gonna start a new art go all in! (with a budget). I bought this recently and it all cost less that 20 dollars (14 to be exact).

Speedball--This has a bit of everything, flat and thin so you can see what you want to learn first (8): http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001QWUHF4/ref=s9_simh_gw_p236_d0_i3?pf_rd_m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&pf_rd_s=center-2&pf_rd_r=1AQ41ZS5PGTBX4KYXY07&pf_rd_t=101&pf_rd_p=1688200382&pf_rd_i=507846

and paper, I have this decently thick paged journal book. I've seen people use regular printer paper (not recommended) but not forbidden.

If you want my opinion, I say GO FOR IT :D it will only set you back 14 dollars or so. Just a tiny bit more than what you spend on dinner with friends.

Get her a pen! Or better yet a calligraphy pen. I got one a while back and they are easy to use and the writing looks really cool!
