In my opinion, the cases that provide the best compromise between protection and minimal bulk are:
Spigen Slim Armor
Verus Thor
Otterbox Commuter
UAG
These cases are pretty slim, but I don't know how much shock/drop protection they offer compared to the ones listed above:
Spigen Neo Hybrid
Verus Iron Shield This one is harder to find. Hands down the most beautiful case in the list. The TPU band is aluminum, and it gives it a really solid feel. The rubber case is well designed and has a very nice look to it. I am using one right now, but I think I might go back to my Otterbox or Slim Armor. If someone would like it, PM me maybe we can work out a deal.
I've used the Commuter series on all of my previous Galaxy devices, and they have always provided excellent drop protection. I've never suffered a cracked screen after a drop in 3 different devices using a Commuter. There have been more than one drop where I couldn't believe there was no damage to the phone.
The Slim Armor is very similar to the Commuters, the build quality isn't as "nice" imo, but for the price it is a really good option. I've never tried the UAG or the Thor. Not sure I like the look of the UAG, but I may try it out anyway just for review purposes. I do plan to pick up a Thor in the next couple of weeks if I move the Iron Shield along to someone else.
I go back and forth on the screen protectors. I've never had an issue with scratches on these screens, and this is my 4th galaxy device since 2010. I had a tempered glass on my S4, cracked them twice with just normal daily use, stopped using anything after removing the 2nd one. Put a screen protector on it for the last two months I used it. Gouged the screen protector dropping it out of a treestand once, but the screen was not damaged at all. I have been going without a screen protector on my Note 4 so far.
I haven't checked out in detail but I have had spigen cases before and I love them.
I have a similar case for Note 3 and I love it:
