Note that by now there are various versions of all the books. The original--from which I am quoting--was subtitled from the adventures of Luke Skywalker and said "by George Lucas" and was ghostwritten by Alan Dean Foster (who also penned the novel Splinter of the Mind's Eye which was intended to be a kind of sequel before anyone knew there would be a wild phenomenon).

I picked up this book at a thrift shop for less than three dollars. It is a novel written before Star Wars was released by George Lucas that tells a completely different story than the movie. I've got a ways in and it offers some really interesting insights if you are a Star Wars fan.
