It's 100% to keep a low price point. Considering that individual ships are $15 each, $40 for three plus templates, dice, and the damage deck is a pretty good value for money. It's significantly harder to get someone to drop $100 on a game they might not end up liking. See: Armada.
>Is the core set really a good game alone
Think of it more as a demo kit. You can play very small-scale games to get a good feel for how the game works, but that won't last particularly long. Standard games are 100 points, so a single core set will be about 1/3 of a standard list for each side.
If you're willing to check out the game, the Blue core set (includes variants of the X-Wing and TIE Fighter from The Force Awakens) is only about $21 on Amazon right now, assuming you're in the US. If you pick up a couple extra small ships for each side, that puts you at ~$65 total in Amazon prices to field 100 points for each player.
I see X-wing Core sets for $24 USD on amazon (MSRP $40), which is decent:
https://www.amazon.com/Star-Wars-Awakens-X-Wing-Miniatures/dp/B014TKHEPA/
and the Ghost for $35 (MSRP $50) which is also not bad. Little cheaper than normal.
Coolstuffinc has their regular markdowns, but yeah black friday is not really any different than most days in regards to X-wing
Also at lower prices (Deal of the day):

X-Wing starter set
Dungeons and Dragons Stareter Set. Less good with two players.
I bought both as a 30 year old man child and love them both! The D&D Starter Set got me, my girlfriend, and my friends into tabletop RPGs.
The X-Wing starter set is fantastic as well. Especially for that age group.
If they are into Star Wars check out Star Wars Destiny as well. It's 15 for the starter box per player. So $30 total.
(Yeah I'm into boardgames...)
I can confirm. I got this X-Wing Miniatures game for free, which was one of the first lightning deals.
I wish I made a killing at 70% off and bought everything I could like I heard stories of. Boardgames is an expensive hobby. But my parents were in town and it was suppertime so I missed the rest of the excitement.

yeah, that's the first edition kit then. There were two core sets released.

It's currently $23 on Amazon
As I said in a previous post, I got it for $18 over Black Friday weekend, so it does get cheaper, but that's still a great price for what you get. Those two TIE/fo alone would cost you $24-28 if purchased separately in the TIE/fo expansion (granted, you get different pilots and upgrades in the expansion, but still).
Do you know if there's a big difference between the TFA core set and the regular core set?
This is the only core set on sale, but as others have said, you will have to buy a $26 conversion kit with it, so it ends up not being worthwhile.
Something like this then... ?
