This is for Christmas and your son wants to be surprised... you gotta go for something big / rare / hard to find. My key for gift giving is to get them something they want, but wouldn't spend the money on themselves. So with that in mind, consider the following:

  1. 7th Continent - Late Pledge This game just finished a hugely successful campaign on Kickstarter. You can late pledge for your son and he will get a copy of the game in 5-6 months and a massive expansion 6 months after that. It's the gift the keeps on giving! Rookie Pledge is $129 + Shipping (https://the7thcontinent.seriouspoulp.com/late_pledge/).

Guessing a college kid on a budget won't have spent that kinda money, but it's the perfect game for college kids... the intro game takes about 15-25 hrs to complete... College kids don't sleep or do homework, so they've got nothing but time!

  2. The Gallerist or Vinhos: Deluxe Edition (links below). These are both heavier and meatier games than most of what he's got, but with Agricola, he certainly is trending toward meatier fare. The production value on these 2 games is out of this world and the games are really excellent. Again, you're looking to wow your son as opposed to just getting a bunch of games he could pick up at Target or Barnes & Nobles for cheap.

  3. Mechs vs. Minions - This game was all the rage about 2 yrs ago and sold a limited print run like hotcakes. It has by FAR the best production value when compared to the cost of the game. At $75, it's clear the developers are taking a loss to produce it. The game is lots of fun and has a resetable campaign system for playing a series of games that impact one another. It's a fun co-op game that also has some loose ties to the League of Legends video game series... guessing your son either knows about the game himself or has friends who play. You can still buy it direct from Riot Games for $75 on their website (link below).

OK, so maybe you don't agree with me and just want to get less "wow" games and opt for less expensive stuff. Here are some I'd recommend that fit in with what else he has and are really solid games:

Didn't really think this through lol, had to remove Skullport because I had gone over by $25. I obviously couldn't include some classics, but I tried to make it somewhat varied and accessible for everyone.

This game is set in the same world as the board game called Scythe, which is a fantastic game!!!

I played this game for the first time just a few weeks ago. It's not bad. My favorite parts are the art and the setting. The gameplay LOOKS like worker-placement meets Risk, but it's not. I haven't played enough to give a solid review on the gameplay.

The setting gives a REALLY strong sense of war fatigue on a pseudo-European continent that can barely fight after years of devastating war.

I don't think Scythe is on the Amazon sale. In fact that price is above normal.

Other sellers are selling it, but sold by amazon.com is exclusive to prime members:

So, based on what you've said, I think I'm gonna have to be that guy and suggest Scythe. This game is pretty new and has been hyped to infinity and beyond and has won a whole bunch of people's choice and critic's awards. I personally am not a fan of it based on personal taste, but I genuinely think it fits pretty much exactly what you're looking for.

It has a military theme but it's still very accessible because combat is not really the focus of the game and there are several viable paths to victory. You strive to expand your influence on the board, which lets you harvest resources, which give you a "collect" feeling. The game may seem simple at first but apparently there is a lot of strategy involved once you dig deeper. You can make deals and form alliances. At its core, it's an engine builder, meaning you start off with an economy that you can customize and make more efficient over time to give you a sense of progression. Plays best with 4 people and lasts about 90 minutes with experienced players.

Overall I think it fits the bill pretty perfectly. It's $55 at CoolStuffInc, $55 at MiniatureMarket, and $75 on Amazon
