We used this to great effect: https://smile.amazon.com/Summer-Infant-Banister-Universal-Mounting/dp/B01B4NDBIE/ref=sr_1_6?keywords=baby+gate+bannister+adapter&qid=1570824631&sr=8-6

It's essentially a piece of wood with zip ties around it and some extra support/adhesives. It's been up for several months now and still working well.

They sell adapters that might work for you. See this one.

Also, you can try to zip-tie a piece of wood to the inside of the bottom rail or under the bottom rail (at the level of the ground), then drill the baby gate into it (as if it were a wall).

Our banister sits at a weird angle too so we had to improvise something to get a gate up.

So we ordered a banister adjustment.

And then this gate.

My husband actually drilled the gate to the adjustment piece which we then zip tied.

Edit: we have have more wall so ours is drilled into wall. It may not work for you. But maybe you could find another gate that requires less wall drilling.

We have a wooden banister and used this, which is basically the same idea: Summer Infant Banister to Banister Universal Gate Mounting Kit https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01B4NDBIE/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apap_gsBOGFkGHheu9

This also really helps stabilize the gate on the other side: Stabilized Baby Gate Wall Protector Work with Walk Through Child, Pet Dog Pressure Mounted Gates, Safety Wall Bumpers Wall Cups https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07DNS8L39/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apap_KMMBKroGF3yOz

We actually ended up not putting a gate at the top because we spend most of our time downstairs, but a good recommendation we heard was to put it 90 degrees to the top of the stairs, so if they do manage to open it or climb over, the spot on the other side of the gate is the floor, not a tumble down the stairs.

IF you look at the things frequently bought with this item, you'll see that one of them is this strap kit. That might not be suitable, but there are lots of others available, and you can make your own, using some lumber ot clamp to the existing banister. The one's I've used (at other people's houses) worked fine for kids, but woulnd't keep a large dog out, if that's your goal.
