I use this. I dig out around the target in a circle or square, pull the plug and work from there.

Just got a Fiskars digging tool from Meijer for $8. It has an 8" blade, one serrated side, and a fork in the tip. It's like this. Very tough. I used to use a nylon shovel but it wasn't sharp enough to get through tough grass roots.

I dig a deep circular hole to get as many roots as possible. I try to keep the plug together, then put it back when done.
