I usually prefer wooden or bamboo needles, but you gotta get metal for such small guys or they'll break!

[These] (https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B000QHGVZK/ref=mp_s_a_1_fkmr0_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1486672476&sr=8-1-fkmr0&pi=AC_SX236_SY340_FMwebp_QL65&keywords=susan+bates+sock+fpn) are my favorite type so far. Good for starting out cheaply. I know tons of advanced knitters move on to circulars and do stuff like two at a time and the magic loop.

For now I love my DPN's!

Edit: they come in different lengths.. my fav is 6-7 inches. 8 and up feel a bit long for small projects.

Thanks! :) I believe I use needles from this set (got them a while ago, but it looks right), and I mostly used the red needles which I think are size 00. I also think I tend to have a pretty tight gauge, a habit from crocheting amigurumi. I also just added a comment with design/yarn info (after checking the rules, oops) but the yarn I mostly use for these is KnitPicks alpaca cloud lace :)

It took a lot of tries to figure out the pattern, and I experimented with bigger yarn and needles to get the general shape of it right before committing to my tiniest yarn and needles. And I used a (clean) hook earring as a cabling hook! So I guess my advice generally is to keep trying, and keep experimenting, until you find the set of tools that leads to the look you're going for. Hope this helps!

I've only tried the 1.5mm but it was nice :) Replacing wicks was super easy and wrapping on the knitting needle was painless as well (7" long... knitting needles are all gauged and I have a handful in different mm/US sizes, so it'll be easy to move up/down a fraction of a mm if I wanted. US 000 = 1.5mm, US 00 = 1.75mm, US 0 = 2mm, US 1 = 2.25mm, US 1.5 = 2.5mm etc.) [This Susan Bates set is not bad, includes 000 to 1, 5 of each size for less than $8.] (http://www.amazon.com/Susan-Bates-Sock-each-size/dp/B000QHGVZK) And you can knit socks when you're done wrapping coils ;)

For the xc-116 build that's a new coil-- I wrapped a new one directly on the xc, so I'm not sure of its diameter.

I went cotton for 2 days; first with the 1.3 ohm dual and then with the .9 dual. It was my 1st try with cotton and bottom feeding and I should try cotton again but swapped the coil/wick relatively quickly... I'd run my previous xc coil on the Cyclone for over a month with only dryburning. With the cotton I kept worrying about wetting the cotton enough, using enough/too much wick, etc. I also felt that the flavor started off great with a brand new wick, and fell off towards the end of the day (replacing wicks at nite). I do need to try single coil micro + cotton, I think the REO wasn't pushing the duals to temp fast enough and something was being lost in translation. I'd love for cotton to "work" for me; rewicking's so easy. I need practice before passing judgment :)

I went back to xc-116 since it's just easy, I use it in all my drippers already so I'm a bit biased. I just call them "contact coils" since they're not really that small, just always touching. I also have always wrapped coils directly on wick (xc + ekowool)... I think the xc would "shard"/lose too many fibers trying to pull it thru a wick (my pet peeve w/ xc is the way its fibers feel "itchy"/crystalline), and it's generally stiff enough to wrap on directly. I do want to try xc-132 eventually, but I don't know if Big Tex Vapor is coming back or what...

I adore my knitpicks caspians - the birch is stronger than bamboo, and I definitely prefer a grippy needle (plus they're pretty!).

If you're a loose knitter, this Susan Bates set is hard to beat for price and sizes (try finding 000 other places, it's not easy!), the metal won't break as easy as wood or bamboo... the finish is nothing to write home about, but they're my go-to workhorses for slippy sock yarns or laceweight stranded colorwork.

Of course I'm also a pretty dedicated dpn'er, so I also have a set of 16" long cheapo bamboos in more standard sizes (no name, us2-us8 if I remember right), but I think at the sweater level most people would prefer a circ :)
