There is a really great book that you can learn a lot about working with SVGs by Sarah Drasner. Thats what I learned all about SVG manipulation and animation from. It is animation oriented, but that dont mater as the primary focus is on working with and manipulating SVGs. And you will learn how to make some amazing web animation with SVG.
