Yes, but I'd actually say a good flashlight. Those yellow plastic 6V ones you can get for four dollars at Walmart are a bad idea. Lousy housing, no seals, the batteries are prone to leaking, and they're really dim even if you get an LED one. In the case where you actually need a flashlight (emergency, power outage, whatever) you'll thank yourself when you can actually see with a quality beam instead of some POS one you got at the mini-mart.

I have two D-cell LED Maglites in my apartment, and a Streamlight ProTac next to my bed. They're more expensive (and hard to find in the case of the Streamlight) but they run circles around anything else I've seen in their price range/size. If you're looking for a static light source that's easily transportable, Sylvania makes this that works really well for me. Obviously not everyone needs this much, but pick something with weather seals, metal housing, and as high of lumen output as you can find.

Also, spare batteries. Check the light once a month to make sure it works and that the batteries haven't burst. Swap the batteries out occasionally for fresh ones. If they fit, put the old ones in something low voltage like your TV remote.

Source: I love flashlights.

Edit: For anyone looking for my ultimate recommendation, my dad has one of these and it's awesome. Quick recharge, comes with charger/caddy base and it's bright.

  1. No. They are pretty tight on there. We used wood screws after drilling through the bands and using a reamer.

  2. Yes! A lot of sanding - both on the wood and the bands as they were a little rusty. Applied stain to the wood and wiped any excess that got on the bands

  3. No, it is a piece of lumber i got at home depot and just applied the same stain to. Used 3 L brackets and screwed them in to both the barrel and the shelf.

  4. Used 2 of these wireless LED track lighting sticks - you can mount them with screws as well. Easy one press button for on/off and I really like them

  5. Pretty awesome! However, the barrels I got had been used to finish some beer in recently, so they smelled like both bourbon and dark beer.

Hey thank you! You're exactly right-- I chose Sylvania Light Flutes because they were easy to install and pretty cheap. Our area is an embarrassment of riches when it comes to terrarium fodder, so good luck out there!
