Pulitzer Prize winning study of Lincoln's genious by Doris Kearns Goodwin
Damn. And if you haven't read Team of Rivals, upon which this is based, I strongly recommend it. Fantastic book, and it can't help but make you wonder what it would be like if someone like Lincoln made it to the White House today.
But to be totally fair, if Stephen Spielberg directed Daniel Day-Lewis in "The Phone Book: M through P" I'd probably go see it.
Team of Rivals an excellent book.

Team of Rivals
Dear god its taking me forevvver.
Used to be the runner-up was the VP, so in the early days you had a number of combative Presidents vs. Vice Presidents. But then, the VP job is essentially powerless, so it was just a lot of yelling.
EDIT: Lincoln and Johnson is a good example. Read this book
Not a historian, but Team of Rivals by Doris Kearns Goodwin was both thorough and entertaining. Really can't recommend this book highly enough to anyone with even a slight interest in American history.
The best biography I've ever read is Team of Rivals: The Political Genius of Abraham Lincoln. I had to stop reading near the end because I didn't want Abe to die. :( http://www.amazon.com/Team-Rivals-Political-Abraham-Lincoln/dp/0684824906
