I bought this: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00OJE1SG8/ref=cm_sw_r_other_awd_dEeLwb790AD6H which came with 2 very thin metal plates. I opened the back and put one on the battery - no bulge or problem doing this. Phone sticks to the magnetic mount like a champ now.
If you only have a 5" screen, it sounds like you might as well use Android Auto directly on your phone screen (standalone mode) so that all you need is your phone, the app, and a cheap mount (like this one). That's how I use it. Works best in portrait mode.

I also glued the left center column vent on my forester in place (pic showing a forester of that era) and put a magnetic phone mount like this one on that vent. This is personally my favorite car mod ever.

Comes with a lot of pieces (both cupholders, door handles and storage, center console, and both cubbies in the front and back). I use a magnetic vent mount and put a thin steel plate between the back of my phone and the case. It works great (and keeps the phone cool in the summer!).

$36 for something that really doesn't have a problem to fix? Ehhh. Not for me.
I have one of these in my car and having to put the magnet in between the case and phone doesn't affect anything in any way.
So I already have a case, then I spent $7 on this. So you can see why your price tag doesn't appeal to me. Plus, I'm not a fan of super bulky cases, so that's another thing.
Kudos on going for it and doing a Kickstarter. And I hope you guys get funded.
I've been using this Techmatte one for a year and a half now and love it. They also make suction ones and one that goes into the CD player, but that one may not work well on all cars depending on your button layout. I just put the metal sheet between my phone and case.

It doesn't affect my battery at all, holds fantastically well, and I just have the magnet sitting inside of the ringke clear case, I didn't stick it to the phone or anything. I have the vent mount for the car, and I have an old metal magnet mount from ikea that I used to use for my n5 on the wall next to my desk when I'm working

Probably something like this or this. I used to have the air vent one, it worked well (though blocked/absorbed air flow/heat). My friends thought it was magic the first few times they saw me use it.
I just stick magnetic plate with an adhesive strip on the back of the iphone 7 battery case and it works like a charm! Trust me any other car mount will have trouble trying to hold it and will fall off, i've already tried this.

I just use one of these so my phone is displaying all that anyway. I never really mess with displaying song info. It's just a single LCD line display so it's not ideal for scolding all that data.

It really is the most logical and elegant place if one uses one's phone for google maps and/ or waze.
For the last years, I have been using a variety of magnetic mounts and they are good in all cars I have used except the W205.
I have a thin, flat magnetic sticker plate on the back of my black iphone. Almost invisible. The magnetic attraction grip with the mount in the car is excellent and is quick and easy to put on and off.
It is almost unbelievable that Mercedes themselves have not integrated a series of hidden magnetic mounts in the cabin.
The person who markets an elegant solution for my problem is going to make a mint.

I switched to a $7 techmatte magnet vent mount. I keep the metal tab between the case and phone. My phone has never fallen off yet, even with a case on and rough roads.

It uses your vents to hold the mount, and it magnetically holds your phone. It comes with a flat metal piece that will stick to your phone or case, and allow the magnetic suction to work properly.
I put the metal disc in a cheap case that I bought and just put my Nexus 5X in the case when I want to use the mount.

I have a 2014 Equinox and I bought this last week, I just installed it this morning. It works well with my IPhone 7 but there isn't a great spot for it due to the vent orientations. I have it up high on the center vent right now and it works okay. They also sell a version the auctions to the window, that way it can go anywhere.
