no, you don't need to discharge them.

Tenergy charger is good or an Imax B6AC that'll charge pretty much any battery you'd ever use.

Why not use lipos?

I am using amazon only due to ease of linking, please do not think I am suggesting you use them.

The battery I purchased: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001DVVECS

The smart charger: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001AVUAVC

Other people will probably point you in a better direction to buy, but if you want to use amazon, go ahead.

Google it.

NiMh.

LiPo.

You’d be much better off with this type of battery which is safer to charge and maintain than a Lipo [NiMH battery pack](FrSky 2000mAh 7.2V NiMH AA Battery Pack for Taranis Q X7 Transmitter https://www.amazon.com/dp/B073KPW46P/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_JklyCb9WBXGGN) and a compatible charger such as [this](Tenergy Smart Universal Charger for NiMH / NiCd Battery pack 7.2V - 12V with charging current Selection/Temperature Sensor https://www.amazon.com/dp/B001AVUAVC/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_lllyCbCPZP70W)

This one should charge it for you without any problems.

Charger

It's intended for RC NIMH batteries, but the battery in the prometheus should be able to use the plug, and charge just fine. I think the Rival charger runs at the 0.9A setting, but the 1.8A setting should also charge your battery without issue I would think. Incidentally, that charger should also work for the normal Rival pack should you have one.

I recommend that you use 6 x AA NiMH cells, use them in the battery holder, as is.

Then buy a 7.2 V charger for NiMH batteries, add a connector and use it to charge your toy.

You really didn't give any details about the battery so this is what i found.

This one I already have an adapter on it for regular tamiya to small tamiya

I wouldn't suggest using the Rival battery pack charger for other battery packs, really I don't like those sorts of chargers full stop they tend to be the cause of a lot of battery pack problems as you have little control over their charge rate plus they tend to break more easily. Ideally you'll go for a programmable charger that can do both NiMH and LiPo (even if you never plan to got LiPo). If you want to save a bit of money Tenergy do a Smart NiMH charger, I've had one for years and it works fine, you would need an adapter as well to use it with an XT60 pack (as it comes standard with Tamyia) for charging using adapters isn't so much an issue as you're only sending 1-2A of current.
