I can't verify the historical accuracy of the little details, but The Afghan Campaign by Steven Pressfield is a fictional account of Alexander the Great's invasion of Afghanistan in 300 BC, as told from the perspective of a common soldier.

Steven Pressfield has written a couple historical novels about Alexander the Great that follow pretty factually the realities of his life and conquest. The Virtues of War are about Alexander himself and his campaign into Persia and beyond. The Afghan Campaign follows the story of some soldiers in his army, while drawing some interesting parallels about what issues invaders face in the area now known as Afganistan both in Alexander's time and today
