His last couple of PBS series are available as whole episodes for streaming online. Highly recommended.

From his autobiography, I don't recall him ever doing the chef-barking-orders thing. He was the personal chef to a few French presidents, and also ran at least two restaurants in the states (a soup restaurant in New York and a little place in Connecticut, IIRC), but I think he's too nice a guy to be anything like Ramsay's TV character.
Definitely check out the autobiography, though, if you're interested. Great read.
