This book helped me a lot when I was first starting out. Color grading is half understanding the technical side of things, half color theory. Study both.

It's a lot of information, but then it's a complicated subject. Doesn't take long to get the basics of black/white balancing, setting blacks and white and mid-tones, and adjusting contrast, but there's so much more you can do and that's where the artistry comes in.
These are just my personal favorites in the last few years. Covers all the filming basics besides sound design. However, if you want the full "survival guide", you'll need a reference for sound design and screenwriting. With lackluster sound and a horrible script, your films aren't going anywhere.
