I don't know why you think NATO doesn't care what the truth is. I think the issue here is that the truth in such times are hard to ascertain until well after the fact.

Certainly, ethnic violence was perpetuated by both sides (and don't forget the Croats). We also have good evidence that the army under the Serbian Republic as well as Bosnian Serbs began more or less systematically targeting Bosnian civilians and Croat civilians straight away at the beginning of the war, in places like Prijedo. The ICJ and ICTY have found that Serbia was not complicit in the ethnic cleansing on a state level, but there's incredibly compelling evidence that much of the violence, at least initially, were perpetuated by ethnic Serbs. The Bosnians were on the back foot and massive amounts of war rape were perpetuated by ethnic Serbs in internment camps set up by Serbs to house Bosnians.

However, if you want a more complete history of the ethnic tensions of the Balkans, it'll take a while, since they don't call that the Balkan Powder Keg for nothing. For a more recent history, http://www.amazon.com/The-Balkans-Nationalism-Powers-1804-1999/dp/0140233776/ref=pd_bxgy_b_text_c is a good start, as well as http://www.amazon.com/The-War-Bosnia-Herzegovina-International-Intervention/dp/1563243091/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1333462770&sr=8-3

Needless to say, that there has been violence against each other for ages, and it was a religious, ethnic, nationalistic, and economic conflict.

Well for Yugoslavian history after the fall of Tito (rather in depth). Watch, "The Death of Yugoslavia" 5 parts:

Its a bit anti-Serb though. I think the creator also wrote a book about the previous 150 years or so of Balkan geopolitical history:

As for books if you want a pro-Serbian spin try:

http://www.amazon.com/Tito-And-Rise-Fall-Yugoslavia/dp/0786701919/ref=tmm_hrd_title_0

Though apparently it has some inaccuracies, West is normally a fairly proficient historian.

There is also this book, though Ive only ordered it and havnt actually gotten it yet about the details and effects of Yugoslavian socialism. I hope its not another communist basher, but fingers crossed:

Hope thats enough for you :)

Looks like a really cool topic!

Made me think of The Balkans: Nationalism, War, and the Great Powers, 1804-1999 by Misha Glenny. Other sources can help trace the split and development of the south-slavic languages especially post-Yugoslavia.
