Asterios Polyp was a great read that got released last year.
If you're also interested in getting exposed to a lot of up and coming writers/artists in a short amount of time, I'd highly recommend picking up one of the annuals, ("The Best American Comics")[http://www.amazon.com/Best-American-Comics-2010/dp/B0052HLIRA]. If you're shopping at an indie store they should probably have a few of the older ones at budget prices.
