I don't have any tips at the moment, but in a few weeks/months I am hoping to start some experiments with this exact kind of thing. I am moving into an apartment with a good friend of mine who has a degree in metalsmithing, and a decent amount of her work at school involved adding different patinas to copper. I went ahead and bought this book at her suggestion. It has hundreds of different recipes, and a good portion of them are for brass. There are a lot of recipes that involve really dangerous chemicals, but I'm sure we'll find plenty of cool ones we can do in an apartment. I'll post results when I actually start experimenting.

It has gorgeous pictures, and detailed descriptions of the processes required for a number of finishes. My folks got it when try were doing some diy copper trim. Turned out decently.
