It's from a book that otherwise is probably filled with helpful information; maybe they just overlook this part of it because rest is good.

The book 'The Compleat Academic' warns the young incoming assistant professor to be cautious about current graduate students who come enthusiastically looking for supervision--Sometimes these are students who have burnt bridges with their existing advisors and are looking to jump ship. (It's not clear whether the students you mention are already in the program?) So, whether you choose a trial period or not, don't make any commitments to anybody before asking around. At my institution we only have undergrads but it's very common to accept RA's as volunteers first and giving them paid work after a term's trial period.
