Maybe not related your question, but I recently read this book. It basically goes on and on about how technology is what makes kids these days dumber. While I think it's a valid argument, he really passes off the other three factors, crummy parenting, crummy teaching, and family income, as if they were nothing. It pissed me off and I stopped reading two thirds of the way through it.

Those of us in our early to mid thirties are sitting in a weird place in history. We straddle the advent of two great cultural forces. We were raised by the first generation to grow up with television, and we are witnessing the first generation to grow up with the internet. These two phenomena have compressed hundreds of years of cultural growth into a few short decades. It will probably take a decade more to shake everything out.

Anyone truely intrigued about today's generation gap should check out The Dumbest Generation by Mark Bauerlein. He goes into specifics about the whats and whys.
