I recently read these two books and would highly recommend them to anyone who enjoys JRE appearances by Steven Rinella, Sebastian Junger, Chris Ryan, and Dan Carlin.

The Falcon by John Tanner: This guy was kidnapped at age 9 by the Ojibwa in the late 1700s and lived with them for 30 years. The book is an incredible view into what life was like for someone to transition from one culture to the other. He quickly forgot English, became a talented hunter and trapper, fathered half-breed children, etc. There are some incredible survival stories in here, and he endured some serious tragedies. Later in life he tried to rejoin white society and it did not go well for reasons that translate directly to things Junger recently touched on.

North American Indians by George Catlin: Catlin was a painter who traveled out to the American frontier in the 1830s to document the native tribes before their looming destruction by white society. He visited many tribes, most of which had never seen a painting before - this created some darkly comical situations along the way as it was seen as powerful magic. For instance, one guy was killed because Catlin painted him from the side, which caused a medicine man to proclaim that the guy was only half a man, and some in the village turned on him. The beauty of the book is in his vivid descriptions of native ways, customs, games, and beliefs, paired with his paintings of these scenes that were quickly disappearing.

Can't recommend either of these books enough, and Rogan should really read them. I guarantee that Rinella is well familiar with them.
