If you want him to stay awake you can try taking a wet washrag and wiping him down when he falls asleep, or giving him a soother(the paci they usually give at the hospital) so he's not comfort nursing on you the entire time if you need a break. Another option is to babywear! Keeping him close to your chest, but not with a boob in the mouth. It'll give him comfort and give you a break to rest those tatas. I had to use a nipple shield the first 4 weeks due to a painful latch from an upper lip tie. If he's tearing you up something fierce (my son flattened my nipples) have a lactation consultant check his mouth for lip and tongue ties.

Edit: this is the soother our hospital gave us and it didn't cause nipple confusion. He's 8 months and has no idea how to actually use it now (he started refusing it at 5-8 weeks)

My little one does best with the gumdrop brand the nipple is similar to the Phillips but the shape and texture of the material allow them to adhere to her mouth a little better and she keeps them in best out if any we have!

The pacifier has worked wonders for my LO! It's funny, though, because she hates how it tastes, so she can't decide if she wants it or not, but she'll end up taking it 9 times out of 10. She also might not like the shape of it. This one she has a really hard time keeping in her mouth. There's really nothing about it that helps her hold it. We're using some regular ones like these she loves (just with the 0 - 3 months size). I hate these, though, because they collect pet hair where the nipple and the mouth guard meet. Give a couple different styles a try and see if she finds one she likes. We gave in after 2 weeks because all she wanted to do was comfort suck. She'd suck on our fingers or knuckles for as long as we let her.
