I've been a fan of reducing bills and enjoying the freedom that brings - even if it's a slightly less convenient freedom - ever since discovering The Freedom Manifesto by Tom Hodgkinson. (More encouragingly titled How to be Free outside of the USA.) One of those rare books I can honestly say "changed my life".
But unfortunately, there's only so far one can go to reducing bills without dramatically changing the fundamentals of what it means to be alive. The largest issue is cost of housing. Even if I were to rent out a literal closet in town, I might have to pay $300 a month. The difference between that and nothing is monumental. Going "off grid" is all well and good, but unfortunately the Law becomes a problem. And even if one were to be allowed to live in a hovel on someone's property gratis and walked into town as necessary, you'd get cited for walking along the highway or for trespassing by cutting across properties.
Sorry. Rambling now. :P
Read The Freedom Manifesto, now! It might save your life.
