And yet, Brennan Manning was a Franciscan priest - one of God's earthly ambassadors - who produced a plentiful and wonderful bibliography. I think you would especially appreciate The Furious Longing of God, which discusses his battles with alcoholism and the struggles of being human, while ruminating on "God's intense, consuming love for His children."

No one's relationship with God is all posies and rainbows. Even Job, a perfectly graceful man, underwent intensive tribulation. It's complicated, but worthwhile. I'd dare say that it makes life worth living - at least, it does for me. God doesn't deliberately speak to me, either, but as I grow older I have learned to go through my days in a state of gratitude that feels very close to constant spiritual contact. Being a Christian gives me a philosophical and spiritual framework to improve and guide my life, and I have become a happier and all-around better person since devoting myself to the study and practice of Christianity.

This quote, above all, does it for me whenever I wonder if religion is for me:

>Religion, opium for the people. To those suffering pain, humiliation, illness, and serfdom, it promised a reward in an afterlife. And now we are witnessing a transformation. A true opium for the people is a belief in nothingness after death–the huge solace of thinking that for our betrayals, greed, cowardice, murders we are not going to be judged.
