OH MAN, THIS IS THE MOST GIRLY THING I DO. And right now my project is reading the free Kindle book section on Amazon. It looks like these aren't all free anymore. I scope pretty frequently, so I guess I'm getting good enough that I'm getting a silly amount of free books:

The Governess Affair - Courtney Milan: Our romantic hero has a tough past, but is actually easy to relate to because he is someone stuck in a difficult position: what he wants and what is right. He has lots of macho man trappings, but is ultimately a decent person who takes the time to change his perspective. I think part of the idea is that he's a damn shade tougher than the "alpha" types in the story, but ridiculed by them. Historical romance.

Come Dancing - Leslie Wells: I assume the title is for this song, which sucked me in to reading it (though I prefer the MB20 version). The romantic hero is a rock star and the book actually takes time to show hard massively fucking difficult that makes him to date. And he struggles with it too, because he does like the romantic heroine, who ain't got time for his bullshit. They both struggle with what they want from each other, their boundaries and their work. Because the heroine has a real ass job and spends a lot of the book chasing a promotion. It's a total beach read, but I loved it. Set in the early 1980s.

Flirts! 5 Romantic Short Stories - Lisa Scott: This isn't my normal cup of tea, I usually prefer fantasy or historical or paranormal just ease the all of the unlikely things that happen along, but these were short and cute, and the boys in them occasionally made me go "aaaaaw." It's saccharine for the sake of being saccharine. The first story is probably the one I like the most. Contemporary.

Skies of Gold - Zoe Archer: First rate sex in this girl's "Skies of" books. All of the heroines are kick ass engineers or spies or lady Indiana Jones-es and completely hold their own. And the romantic heroes respect the hell out of these women in a way that is just...well, it really helps the sex scenes feel mutual and hot. This one is probably the best, if the most simple. She has lost her leg and is having difficult accepting her body, he is a military science project who has also have trouble accepting his body and who he now is. Both are lonely, both have cut themselves off from the world, both help the other heal. Steampunk as fuck.

If you want more, I can do more.

Well, I'm almost 40, and I trade books with my 60+ neighbor.

If you're sticking with romance, Eloisa James is a good romance author; Courtney Milan is also amazing.

For science fiction and fantasy with a dose of romance - Lois Bujold's Vorkosigan series (start here) is very very very good, and her Chalion series (here) is excellent for the first two books (you can easily skip the third book, it's a prequel and not as interesting all around.)Bujold tends to be very, very popular with women, and older women; she's a very sharp and insightful person who happens to write big, fun space operas.

I strongly recommend Elizabeth Moon's Remnant Population; it has no romance but features an older woman, adn is very very thoughtfully done. Her The Speed of Dark is more challenging but still excellent work. Karen Lord's The Best of All Possible Worlds is also utterly amazing.

For nonfiction, try Bill Bryson. I recommend A Walk In The Woods.

Wow, I just read "Entreat Me," as well. Since we seem to have similar tastes, have you tried any Laura Kinsale?

Also, as many people were recommending Courtey Milan, I tried out a free prequel of hers last night and loved it:

The Governess Affair

Took me about two hours to read, it's free, and now I'm looking forward to her novels :)

I have been loving Courtney Milan which is historical romance but with a bit of forget accuracy, it is fiction let me give you herionies modem women can root for. I suggest you start with the brother's sinister series. It starts with this novella which is free and concerns really disturbing things and class issues but still offers a real romance.
