With good cinematography comes great lighting. When I first started in the film industry as Grip, I literally sat on the back of the truck between takes and read Harry Box's Set Lighting Technicians Handbook. Its invaluable information as far as lighting is concerned. The Grip Book by Mike Uva is another great handbook. Generally, if you walked into Barnes and Noble, all the other books on the shelf are worth a read. "Rebel without a Crew" And "Save the Cat" are some great reads.

The Grip Book is essential for general Grip knowledge. If you can't buy it. I recommend going to a library and borrowing it.

Because of concern from others I will add a few things in here to show that I do, in fact, care about set safety as well as set etiquette.

This is a link to 101 G&E tips to live by. Read it, reread it, and then read it once more. It covers things from safety to etiquette and gear to staging. All valuable and all useful. Mini bible.

Secondly, the Canadian film set safety law by the Canadian government. Just as important to know.

If any of this seems too daunting or out of your depth then considering backing out from the production or at least stepping down.

I'm all for diving in head first and learning by doing but know your limits. I'm a Humber grad from TO so I know what my education got me as a tech and I'm assuming you had similar schooling. But know your limits.

I personally have faith.

Finally, if you're serious about being a full time grip/tech then buy The Grip Book. This last one isn't a suggestion. Buy it if you want to do this full time. It's invaluable.

Be safe, be smart, never be afraid to ask, and never be afraid to say something is unsafe and that you won't do it. That's all I have to say.

learn both grip

and electric.

so you don't become one of those people who think all it takes is a camera to make the visuals of a film.

I learned from Reflections and
The Grip Book.
