Honestly, yes. There are so many other domestic and foreign situations going on and any one time that the intelligence task forces that deal with Ukraine were likely watching it and even trying to influence it, but as far as any long term goals or weighing long term risks given all of the other concerns going on in the world I think it's ultimately a short term gamble that's ballooned into this massive fiasco and whether or not to push Russia's luck or take what they have, essentially giving the go ahead on the rest of the scenario is probably something made on a day to day basis at this point.

That's why when we ask the question what happens if Russia's gamble doesn't pay off and we keep coming up with nothing good, I came to this conclusion. It might all just be a huge risk that if something on the ground not planned for trumps up, maybe even at complete random as it has been in many situations throughout history, Russia loses the chips it put down and that's that.
