Someone is trying to pull a fast one. You can buy that edition for $24 new on Amazon. It definitely isn't a 1966 edition.

I have this edition, and I quite like it.

But really, it's probably best if you look through several editions and pick the one that appeals to you the most.

This hardcover edition is really nice. If the ~$30 price tag is to high then I would go with this one. There is also an annotated edition which includes a lot of additional information in it.

You didn't link the slipcase green edition, but assuming you're talking about this one: I grew up with a '70s edition of that one in my house, and always thought it had a gravitas and significance greater than other books. The multicolored ink, the foldout map, the font choices, the foil stamping, the fact that it's all Tolkien (his art, his words, nothing else)... it's just lovely. I think the perfect presentation of the work.

I don't know how well it would go with the LOTR edition you're getting, but if I was looking for a definitive copy of the Hobbit (I already have the Annotated one and a cheap paperback, neither of which I'm a huge fan of) I'd definitely go that route.

I asked for the same thing a few years ago. My son did a bunch of research and they bought me this and this. They're gorgeous. The paper is a so rich feeling.

I'm every dwarf in The Hobbit because I am small, dirty, hungry, tired and blunt, like they are for most of their journey :) I'm also hairy because I forgot to shave lol

This is the edition that I have which is illustrated by Tolkien.

I have the red leather collector's edition of LotR, and am waiting to get this one of The Hobbit. I hope there is one of the Sil to go with. (does some hunting). Ooo... this one looks very promising! And Tolkien reading Beren and Luthien? Yes please...
