That’s a tough request, because usually conservative translations (like the ESV) go with more conservative commentaries and vice versa. It’s unfortunate that there’s no easily readable translation that also falls on the more progressive/academic side. While not a study Bible, I’d recommend The Inclusive Bible, which is a more readable translation, also with gender-neutral renderings, and it has a lot of really neat notes from a progressive/feminist angle (again, not as many as a study Bible). If it was you and not your friend, I’d recommend just reading the ESV (or even The Message) alongside an academic commentary, and the Oxford one would be my go-to recommendation.

Anyone who is curious and doesn't want to just knee jerk hate Christians might like this translation.

I've been meaning to read the Life of the World for awhile! How do you like it?

The NRSV is probably the most gender-neutral of the mainstream translations. There was also the TNIV but that was discontinued, although the 2011 NIV is fairly gender-inclusive. The most gender-neutral translation is the rather eclectic Inclusive Bible, which makes more radical renderings compared to the NRSV.

As far as progressive translations that already exist, my pastor recommends The Inclusive Bible. I haven't read it myself, but it looks like it shares many of the goals of a translation as you do, if in a fixed rather than updatable form.
