Not that you're probably interested in the reality of the situation, this (probably now outdated) book is well worth a read, on the topic of Islam vs Islamists - The Islamist by Ed Husain

How to give a Western liberal a migrane:
Pit their commitment to tolerance against their secular values.

To my way of thinking, religion actually has very little to do with the inner-conflict liberals seem to have with respect to your question. I think we may feel forced to weigh one of the aforementioned values against eachother and we are not at all comfortable with that.

So, as a Western liberal, here's how I navigate the issues you raise:

-Islam vs. Islamism: One is the religion, the other is the religion-politics combo platter. Much like my response to Christian fundamentalists, I reserve comment on the religion but I am very critical of the combo-platter. Any attempt, from any religion, to enforce their values beyond their congregation/mosque/temple, etc. earns my vocal opposition. However, what you believe within your home, social circles and place of worship is your business and none of mine.

However, I remain uncomfortable with making declarative statements about Islam. My issue is not with Islam, it is, as you point out, with those religious fundamentalists (of any faith) who would seek to demand submission from society at large.

EDIT: I am not a Muslim so I can't come at this issue with in-depth knowledge of the Qu'ran. But some recommended reading: The Islamist, Ed Husain. Raised in Britain, he was radicalized in the 90's and ultimately departed the movement after a series of revelations about his father's Islam vs. the Islam of the radicals. A very interesting perspective all the way around and most relevant to current affairs.

They are both excellent books though that should be read alongside Edward Husain's book the Islamist.

I think you will learn more about the ideologies and methods from Husain's book.

They bother saw the errors of their ways and turned against the ideologies of hizb-ut-tahrir.

Its not just fox it's really a significant number of media outlets.

I realise fear sells but I'd rather the media didn't demonize and alienate those Muslims who are completely blameless by conflating their religious beliefs with political violence.

There is plenty of research out there about the impact of islamophobia and its all negative, negative to society and negative to the person. It feeds prejudice and hatred and can even lead to verbal and physical attacks on Muslims. Given the wider context of social alienation the radicalising elements within muslim communities come along with absolutist, simplistic political solutions such as islamism. I recommend Maajid Nawaz's Radical or Ed Husain's Islamist for more details on these radicalising groups, how they recruit and what happens inside them. They are both excellent books, Husain's is really enlightening, Nawaz's book is more exciting.
