I work for a publisher and my first thought was that Viking/Penguin books stopped producing the box set, so a decrease in the supply would increase the price.

But after a little more research, I'm guessing it's because Amazon's pricing fluctuates quite a bit. It may have been cheaper when you purchased it because they were running a promo or they were competing with another site's marked down price.

I did find this listing for 38 which is closer to what you originally paid.

The Magicians TV show, and the book series it was based upon. Brakebills is the magical school I wish I could go to, not Hogwarts. Sadly, even if it existed, they wouldn't let me in.
