Andrew Bacevich wrote extensively about this point in his book: The New American Militarism: How Americans Are Seduced by War. His theory is that with the end off the draft only a tiny fraction of the population considers the military for their children. That fraction is mostly from the south, rural and relatively poor. They are going to vote Republican anyway.

The rest of the people put a magnetic "support the troops" ribbon on the back of their car to show that they really don't give a fuck. They don't even care enough to put a bumper sticker on the car, because that might leave a mark when you peel it off. People in this country don't care about American dying and they sure don't care about Iraqis or Afghans dying. If Little Junior is not going to be called up to got get his legs blown off by an IED in Afghanistan, then the truth is that SecurityMom couldn't care less that some hillbilly from rural Mississippi comes back from Iraq in a box.

Bacevich thinks that the best way to stop the Endless War would be to reinstate the draft.
