Gary Larson put out a book called The Prehistory of the Far Side. There's a section where he demonstrates cartoons that got rejected, cartoons that were modified before release, that kind of thing.

It's really the best Far Side book ever.

I don't know about which book mentioned this in the forward, but in this compilation he talks about that situation, and it's pretty much how you said it.

He also has in there a comic that almost made me choke when I saw it... it's a drawing of a baby's crib and lying in the crib is a huge snake with a big bulge in its middle. The caption reads "No. You really didn't see this. Turn the page."

I have the "Pre-history of the Farside" That was my first book and I can't count the amount of times I read that one.

Edit: You can find it here.

From the book: The PreHistory of The Far Side: A 10th Anniversary Exhibit

It's a great book, and a must have for any Far Side fan.

Edit: To clarify, the text under the caption is Larson's take on the comic.

This appears in The PreHistory of the Far Side: A Tenth Anniversary Exhibit. Really worth the money if you are a Far Side fan. Includes the story of how it came to be, other mistakes that were made (both by him and his publishers), hate mail and the comics that inspired them (hilarious), drawings from his sketchbook (weird and cool), a collection of his all-time favourite Far Side strips, and a chapter called "Subtle Things". That chapter is my favourite part of the book. He talks about how small things can greater enhance or diminish humour, it's really interesting.

It's got a lot commentary by Larson, this incident among others.

I'm 26, and love it. My parents and my great-aunt loved it, so I was raised kind of surrounded by it. We had several of the books* scattered around the house, and I loved flipping through them.

*ETA: Far Side Gallery, FSG 2, PreHistory of the Far Side which is probably my favorite, Weiner Dog Art (we had miniature dachshunds, so of course we had to have it), and The Chickens Are Restless - I grew up in a rural area and my family have always kept livestock, done 4-H, competed in rodeos, etc., so the large number of 'rural life'-based jokes in The Far Side was probably a large part of the appeal.

I didn't link out of respect to Gary.

I don't know what that blog is, but it basically paraphrases his notes in A Prehistory of the Far Side. As (somewhat rabid) Larson fan, I thank you for attempting to shed light on an amazing comic, but also ask you to remove the link.

If anyone missed Cow Tools or any of the Far Side cartoons, I suggest heading to the nearest seller of books.
