I'm very wary of self-help books, yet I must recommend "The Procrastination Equation" by Steel. It's the only work worth any damn about procrastination, and it's the whole package - scientifically-backed knowledge with real-life tips and solutions. buy it - you'll want to review and revise it every so often. If used correctly - it'll wash away all your procrastination, like tears in the rain.

Vermeer and this guide is using a fairly famous equation for motivation:

Motivation = ENERGY x (Value x Expectancy / Impulsivity x Delay)

It's called the temporal motivation theory.

The founder of this formula (Piers Steel) wrote a book called the

When I first read about Temporal Motivation Theory I thought this was the answer.

It's not for me.

The biggest factor is how simple the task is.

It's important to break it down so that it's easy to do; taking baby steps gives better odds that things will get done.

Once I start a task, the next most important part is to avoid distractions (it's hard for me to stay on task).

Il y a plusieurs modèles qui peuvent expliquer la procrastination. Voilà un résumé de ces modèles (en anglais). Après, le modèle qui me parle le plus c'est celui de Piers Steel qui est un peu la star de la procrastination dans les sciences comportementales. Pour lui, la procrastination est fonction de quatre paramètres dans son bouquin :

  1. Les attentes de résultats envers la tâche : ça a trait autant à la valeur même du but qu'à l'impression qu'on a de l'atteindre.
  2. La valeur de la tâche : plaisante, contraignante, etc.
  3. L'impulsivité de la personne
  4. Le délai de réalisation de la tâche : soit imposé, ou non, long, court, etc.

    Et pour lui la procrastination est le résultat de l’interaction suivante :

    Attentes X Valeur / Impulsivité X Délai

    Donc en gros, imagine rendre une rédaction de fin de semestre. Les attentes sont plutôt basses, écrire c'est dur et tu te sens pas à la hauteur, imaginons (attentes -). En plus t'aime pas ça (valeur -) et t'es assez impulsif (+). Enfin, le délai est long et tu dois rendre l'écrit à une date limite et pas petit bout par petit bout (délais +). Et voilà pourquoi tu risques de procrastiner.

    Mais ça c'est une des théories parmi d'autres, mais je trouve que c'est la plus compréhensible. A toi maintenant de repérer ces paramètres dans les situations où tu procrastines et d'essayer d'augmenter la valeur ou les attentes que tu as envers cette tâche. Si jamais, dans son livre, Steel donne pas mal de conseils pratiques pour éviter de procrastiner.

Yep, Visualization did jack shit for me too. I've read many self-help books, and so far the only ones that have helped me were those written by scientists who have researched their field for a long time, and people recommend them, that also had practical exercises in them. Very specific, but that's the truth. Here's a list:

It's not a self-help book, it's written by a PhD and analyzes the behavioral science behind procrastination. There are tips at the end of the book based on the research and findings, but I didn't even get that far; just learning how and why my brain is working against me was enough for me to make great strides toward overcoming it. I read most of this book last Friday and Saturday, and it has had a profound impact on how I have worked this week. I can't recommend this book strongly enough.

There are several books I've read that do a good job of helping me understand the problem, which is absolutely essential to learning how not to procrastinate.

The Now Habit - mentioned several times already

The Procrastination Equation by Piers Steel. A very objective look at the causes of procrastination.
