Just in case you haven't - The Resistance: Avalon is the same game rethemed with a few additional roles and abilities.

I like The Resistance... I love The Resistance: Avalon. That final Merlin point is a real heart dropper! Did they have an excellent Percival or a terrible Merlin? Or an excellent Merlin pretending to be a terrible one? Augh! :D

  • Dead Last is a recent game with a traitor mechanic. On Amazon now for exactly 20 bucks. But it requires a minimum of 6 players.

  • Coup scales well from 2 to 6. It is a good game of hidden identities.

  • One Night Ultimate Werewolf / Vampire are good games that work from 3 - 10 players. Good amount of bluffing and hidden identities.

  • And then there's always the classic Resistance: Avalon.

Edit1: Few other suggestions: Bang: The Dice Game, Citadels, Mascarade

    Edit2: Formatting

You can also try The Resistance: Avalon. My group finds it a little more balanced and enjoy the theme more.

As others have said, Ultimate Werewolf, The Resistance, and The Resistance Avalon are all good. Other options for this type of secret-role/party game are Bang! and Samurai Sword.

Battlestar Galactica is another popular game with secret roles. However, it is much longer and more complex than the other games I mentioned.

I'm not a robot... or am I? └[∵┌]└[ ∵ ]┘[┐∵]┘

Anyway I, robot has found a great game for the little botters in the family.

Amazon's average price is $16.92. It's been around $16.45 for the past few months.

I make an annual $100+ purchase from CoolStuffInc for free shipping, so I jump anytime Amazon gets close to the CSI price. Right now, $14.92 is just 33 cents more than CSI.

Assuming you want to spend half of your money:

Star Realms: http://www.amazon.com/White-Wizard-Games-Realms-Deckbuilding/dp/B00HRGMPIU

Sushi Go: http://www.amazon.com/Sushi-Go-Pick-Pass-Card/dp/B00J57VU44

One is a deck builder like dominion, the other is drafting like 7Wonders. (If you want 4 player star realms pick up two copies). That is a grand total of $24/$36. If you add Coup OR/and Resistance/ Resistance Avalon:

Which are similar (made by the same people), you could be three games in for 40 bucks.

Then add a heavier game or two medium sized games-- check out TableTop, or our "What did you play this week" threads for some ideas-- and you come out with a nice collection of games (5 or six of them) for about 100 bucks.

I'm not saying you have to get these exact games, but think about a few smaller card games with a bigger game for the most bang for the buck.

The resistance (avalon preferably) is 100% worth it since it plays 5-10... but what about days when you only have 4, etc. Catan can't do all the work forever.

I can give better recs if you edit to add more info; even if it's just things like "I like space. The people I play with like space... and Pirates!"

The Resistance is always fun and plays up to 10 people really easily. Although, some people say Avalon is better

Zombie Dice is an option for lots of people and super easy to teach.

Just One is FABULOUS and takes two seconds to learn! You can easily take it out of the box and travel with it in a baggy!

Avalon/Werewolf social deduction type games are fun for big groups!

Age of War is a small push your luck die roll game (not the best for a big group but for a portion of the group)

Box of Rocks is a trivia type game where it is all humans versus a box of rocks

Set is good solitaire or with big groups but is going to cause lots of head scratching. It's good for those who like puzzles!

Red7 is a personal favorite but doesn't play to 10 people

> Maybe not quite what you're imagining, but what about something like Town of Salem / Mafia / Werewolf.

Avalon is a board game version of this with some very basic mechanics that make it very fun. I can strongly recommend it.

Yeah, 40 bucks seems to be the go to price for a lot of games, every once in a while you can find a few bucks knocked off of it.

Personally I go to a friend's game night, and he has some games that go close to 100 dollars in value. Are they fun? Yes. Would I pay that much? In no such way ever.

I'm a big fan of "non-competitive" games, you can ruin someone's day in Catan, I enjoy it, but when I host, I tend to go for more co-op games. Firefly is competitive, but I have to say you don't notice the competition, I had so much fun flying around the 'verse that I was surprised when someone finished their goal mission, meaning the game was over.

Avalon and Cash and Guns are two games that are also fun that run a little cheaper than 40 bucks. Avalon has you on a quest with King Arthur's team, only one of you is a traitor, one of you is Merlin who knows who the traitor(s) are, but none of you can say out loud who is who. You go on quest and basically everyone turns in a chip that indicates if the quest is or isn't successful, chances are a traitor will allow the first mission to succeed to throw suspicions off, lots of fun.

Cash and Guns is silly, you get fake guns and a pile of (also fake) cash the round is simply you pointing your gun at someone, and you either do or don't have a card that says your gun fires, your opponent can "chicken out" and give you the cash, or get shot and lose the cash, but if you have a blank, and they stay in, you split the score. Lots of fun because of the "pressure" and sudden betrayals.

edit - It should also be said, if you have more than four people at game night, then you need the Settlers expansion.

edit edit - Also, Amazon isn't always the best price wise, I don't know why, but games seem to move up and down this ten dollar spectrum right now Firefly is 47 bucks, but I've seen in under 40.

Try to find out what your opponent thinks you're doing. Make them wrong without them noticing it. You can also think about why your opponent did certain action and try to counter it (with long term and subtle actions to not give away that you noticed his/her plan).
When playing against strategists, be aware, they are good at this and then you need to go one level deeper.

They will do something to make you counter in a certain way that they want. So, instead of countering their strategy, you need to play their game but ready to counter what comes next.

Summarizing, try to know more than what you show that you know and make your opponents think that they, instead of you, are in that position.

You can practice this with simpler games like Rock, Paper, Scissors and Dots and Boxes.

If I may, I'd like to recommend you a (table) game that I believe you're going to like. The Resistance: Avalon. It's packed with strategy and action. I was fooled dozens of times before getting the hang of this game. I'm not that good yet, I'm but getting there.

So does the following include all the characters?

https://www.amazon.co.uk/Indie-Boards-Cards-AVA1IBC-Resistance/dp/B009SAAV0C/ref=sr_1_1?s=kids&ie=UTF8&qid=1500302596&sr=1-1&keywords=the+resistance+avalon

The reason i ask is that everybody seems to just put a bit of paper in the sleeve of a generic minion/servant to denote lovers, lancelots etc., which makes me think they're not included in the game.
