Read this. A rift causes the damned to basically queue up to enter our world, in any sort of animal they can get into.

An early standout sequence was a lady near a zoo, and the lion zombie was after her. It was actually trying to speak.

There was a sequel, but I couldn't get into it. It was just way too depressing.

The Rising by Brian Keene is probably my favorite zombie book to date. The zombies are extremely nontraditional though, which can turn some people away.
