Here's my ever-growing list for when I homeschool my kids. I regularly recommend these books to adults who want to bulk up their understanding of themselves and the real world. They also address most of the scenarios freakscene mentioned.

  • Homer E. Moyer Jr. - The R.A.T. Real-World Aptitude Test: Preparing Yourself for Leaving Home - "Subject areas include cooking, managing money, etiquette, geography, sports and many more. As a test of preparedness for the real world, the R.A.T. provides answers to some of life’s most common stumbling blocks, such as how to change a flat tire or how to handle computer problems as well as facts on generalized knowledge in areas such as geography and politics. The R.A.T. is perfect for young adults leaving the nest and adults who are entering a new phase of life such as parenthood or retirement."

  • The Self Matters Companion - ". . . readers must first complete two questionnaires he designed to assess their "authentic self" and their "congruency" (how someone's current life compares with a vision of an ideal life). With the scores from these tests, readers can then embark upon a specific plan for changing their lives-and for determining which external and internal forces they will, or won't, allow to control their futures."

  • Alex J. Packer - How Rude!: The Teenagers' Guide to Good Manners, Proper Behavior, and Not Grossing People Out - "Whether the topic is rude noises, table manners, or squabbles over the TV remote, Packer has a word or two to say, managing to get the point across without scolding or haranguing. He also has some advice on a few issues not usually covered in books on manners--like in-line skating, computer hacking, and "sex ediquette" (it's "beyond rude" to give someone HIV, get someone pregnant, or ignore the word "No")."

Edit: Italicized book titles and added emphasis on the workbook.

I'm always trying to lengthen this list; does anyone else have any practical, must-read manuals for life? I don't think we can write a single book as OP wishes, but we can dang sure fill a shelf with them.
