I found it really helpful to listen to Martin Shaw's unabridged reading of The Silmarillion. It's produced beautifully and Shaw's performance is pitch perfect and lends the proper gravitas to the proceedings. For me, it made it much easier to pick up on the names and places via audio.

I have it on CD. There are a few glaring pronunciation oddities, but I agree it is excellent and worth having.
