- Passive solar...carefully placing windows facing south to catch the winter sun, no windows on north or west side, thermal mass to absorb the heat of the sun, shading the windows from summer sun. The home will heat itself in the winter and stay cool in the summer with few inputs and no mechanical parts to break. (This orientation is for the northern hemisphere.) There are many books & websites that can explain in detail. - Consider how you will use the home. Plan spaces around activities such as your sewing, canning, or butchering. Also consider flow. How will you get the groceries from the car through the door and into the pantry? How will guests get through the front door, hang up winter coats, and find the bathroom without going through your private bedroom?
- How will you age in this home? When you get arthritis, will the door knobs and light switches be types easier for that condition? If you end up in a wheelchair, are the hallway and doorways wide enough to wheel a chair through?
