Funny story - I'm from Canada and was heading to Mexico to Wwoof for a month or so. Entering the US in Washington the border guard interrogated us, and we told him we were going to Mexico to work on a farm. He was a little confused, in a pleasant sort of way. He called his buddy over for us to repeat our story, and they listened in disbelief. Then told us that they only hear about Mexicans coming to the US to work farms, and "why on Earth would a couple Canadians want to go volunteer on a farm in Mexico?!!" Funny little exchange.
On that trip we "caught and released" 12 scorpions from our accommodation - which was actually an incredible two bedroom house on the farm, that we had to ourselves. On the 2nd last night, one of them finally got me. I felt it crawl on my leg... groggily woke up, and rolled over a bit, and BAM! scorpion sting. Threw the covers off, and see the little bugger scurry off the bed. Luckily they weren't too poisonous. I drank about 10 litters of water, and ate 6 cloves of raw garlic, and all I experienced was some numbness.
Also - on that trip, the farm owners introduced me to two of my favourite books...

Wwoofing's great
>Observant feat
Mechanically speaking you're correct but the point of the feat is that your base level of conscious awareness--your passive perception--has increased dramatically. It reminds me of the conversations in the book The Tracker: The True Story of Tom Brown Jr . In it Brown recounts learning animal tracking from a figure called Grandfather. In a typical exchange Grandfather might ask, "How many things did you notice in the past minute as we walked along this trail?" Brown would excitedly rattle off 5 things he was aware of: the wind rustling the leaves in the trees, the movement of chipmunks, the direction of the wind, the location of the sun, the appearance of the horizon, etc.. Then Grandfather would list 20 things he noticed during the same time and Brown would be floored. We're just not that aware of how little we're actually aware of.
The Tracker by Tom Brown
It was recommended to me by my court mandated psychologist when I was 14. I'd say the legal troubles were a bigger influence, but that book definitely refocused me in what was ostensibly a rough time.
You should read The Tracker.
