This one by Lasch is definitely worth reading, although you need to keep in mind the time period when it was written. Plenty of history of political movements that seem to have been forgotten. Definitely an antidote to a lot of the bullshit use of the word 'populism', you will feel much more informed about what that was in an american context after reading the book.

Some of it seems prophetic, but you don't have to feel trapped into some sort of reactionary conservatism to sympathize with a lot of his points. I think it was a genuine response by someone who had considered himself a marxist to what he saw as the impending rightwing form of idpol that has now flourished, cynical, corporate, opportunist, and not Left. In a way, I can credit this book, reading it when it came out, to having helped inoculate me against ever seeing idpol as leftist in any way. I had disagreements with some aspects of his argument, but it was very worth reading.
