When HARLIE was One by David Gerrold.

The Turing Option by Marvin Minsky and Harry Harrison. This is a flawed novel, but it's still very much worth reading for its portrayal of AI.

At this time, now, in the real world, we have computer scientists working with experts from a host of disciplines toward to goal of achieving AI. If you made a list of the 100 top scientific goals, AI would be in there, as well as many other lines of inquiry that would be strongly linked to the development of AI. There are books, movies, musicals, soft drinks. AI, AI, AI.

When and if AI is achieved, it won't happen in secret, and it won't happen by accident.

If you're interested in taking a look at some of the existing literature, I'd recommend When HARLIE was One by David Gerrold. It was first written in the 70s and it's a little dated, but it's still the best SF on the subject. Also of note is The Turing Option, written by Harry Harrison and Marvin Minsky, an AI pioneer. It's unfortunately a deeply flawed novel, but still readable, and enjoyable for its depiction of a realistic AI character. Then of course there're Banks' Culture novels, about a post-scarcity galactic civilization run by +/- benevolent AI entities.

Also, it's a good idea to take a look through the Wikipedia page for artificial intelligence. Of note would be the approaches to AI, including a cognitive approach that seeks to study and emulate human consciousness, and a logic-based approach that seeks to create consciousness from the ground up. Also, the many ethical questions surrounding AI, if you choose to get into that. And you can glean a lot of good terminology.
