James D’amato of the One Shot network wrote a book you might like https://www.amazon.com/Ultimate-RPG-Character-Backstory-Guide/dp/1507208375
I highly recommend checking out The Ultimate RPG Character Backstory Guide, it has a lot of great exercises and writing prompts for really getting into your character's head. It builds from aspects of your character's history and childhood into how those experiences might affect his reactions to hypothetical situations, which sounds like exactly what you're looking to do
A fun dice bag? The Backstory Guide? Maybe a dice tower or tray?
Great; thanks for asking. He's in the planning stages atm, and we're designing our characters. I bought this book to really dig into my character's background. Our DM wants to chat with us each individually about our characters for a little bit beforehand. It sounds like we will be meeting 1-2 times a month since that's what will work best for all of us, and alternating between online and meeting IRL. I'm pretty excited to get going, then again, I've been waiting years to play. I can wait a little longer. Hbu? Did you find a group?
Yeah. He wrote a book about making interesting characters last year and I thought there was a lot of useful advice for even experienced RPG players. I especially liked the page where he was like "For every edgy loner trait you must pick at least one teamwork trait."
And I misremembered, the next book in the series is how to be an interesting player, not a good GM, but I'd still say it has good advice. James D'Amato's day job is rapidly learning to make a fun experience in an unfamiliar system, he's probably the world's leading expert in general DMing at this point.
Honestly, James d'Amato did you one better.
