If you would like to know more about stock investment, read Peter Lynch's One Up on Wall Street. http://www.amazon.com/One-Wall-Street-Already-Market/dp/0140127925
And Warren Buffett's The Warren Buffett Way http://www.amazon.com/Warren-Buffett-Way-Investment-Strategies/dp/0471177504

Both books have one clear message, invest in what you know. Lynch has a funny anecdote about how doctor's love investing in tech stocks while technicians love investing in medical stocks. The idea of a mysterious, potentially strong earning stock is appealing, but it usually doesn't work. Investing and finance should be BORING. Take the gambler's mentality out of investing. That way you remove emotions and invest wisely.

That one thing/place/restaurant chain you love could be the key to your investment success. As a true fan, you generally keep up on the latest of its operations, which in turn affects its value.
