The Way of a Pilgrim: and The Pilgrim Continues His Way may or may not be fiction(it's an anonymous work). But either way its a good read.

I learned everything I need to know about prayer from this book:
[The Way of a Pilgrim] (http://www.amazon.com/Way-Pilgrim-Continues-His/dp/0932727301/ref=sr_1_2?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1343517817&sr=1-2&keywords=the+way+of+a+pilgrim)
It actually works even for people who don't believe but who seek peace. I say this as an atheist who prays regularly.

I read this book, The Way of the Pilgrim, which is all about a Russian Monk wandering though the countryside talking to every monk/hermit/pastor who will talk to him about praying without ceasing and meditation. He centralizes on "The Jesus Prayer" which translates to "Lord Jesus Christ, have mercy on me" and repeating it 12,000 times a day.

After reading this, I decided to try it out. I couldn't come close to 12,000 times a day, but I did recognize a notable change in my demeanor and relationships with others. I took it to a point where I would sit and pray this thought alone for about an hour every morning. I since then haven't done it as regularly, but I would say that it is a good practice to adopt.

In regards to meditation in general, I would say that there is both healthy and dangerous meditation. Clearing your mind is only as healthy as what you fill your mind with afterwards. Meditating on truth then becomes centralizing yourself on truth or core identity as owned by Christ. Clearing your mind to "wander" generally leads to either wasted time or unhealthy directions. Meditating on the word is to have it written on your heart and in your mind (Joshua 1:8) so that you can dwell on them at all times.
