When you ask "does it read anything like..." i immediately think of the language so in that sense you would have to read a literal translation. These are also available, but of course, since the mahabharat is 100,000 verses, it is something of a project.

The abridged one i have linked is wonderfully written and shares the same stories, however if you are looking for something that has the charm and archaic-ness of an old world language, you won't find it.

Nonetheless there is endless intellectual discourse regarding the same, i am currently reading An Inquiry In The Human Condition. This book is quite a high level approach where the language is addressed in detail.

As such, you will find most Hindu texts to be written in verse, or a series of Shlokas. These can be beautifully crafted and there are numerous times i have had to just stop and absorb the sheer humbleness and depth of just what can be contained in 2 lines. It wouldn't hurt to read up a little about Sanksrit and why it's considered to be the world's only "perfect" language.

You can check out The Wonder that is Sanskrit, but i really don't know why it's so expensive. Over here in India it's around 20 dollars. I'm sure there are numerous online sources as well.

There's a lot to imbibe throughout these readings, especially since they aren't religious preachings of any kind even there are certain tendencies you might observe in your journeys, the approach is more through philosophical learnings as a result of stories and tales.

Hope i have helped.
