It has a retractable USB cord. Amazon.com

u/beericane · 12 pointsr/Homebrewing

Spend the extra $10 and get this instead: http://www.amazon.com/Thermaltake-Mobile-Fan-External-Cooling/dp/B00080G0BK

Gives you speed control and USB power all in one. Just grab a spare usb to wall power adapter from your "old phones" drawer at home and you are a few magnets and a box away from having your stir plate completed.

I use this one and it could not have been easier.

u/esoogkcudkcud · 8 pointsr/buildapc

I just got a Thermaltake desk fan off of Amazon. I feel like it's a PCMasterrace badge of pride to have a case fan sitting on my work desk.

u/bowman088 · 7 pointsr/Homebrewing

Too expensive? All you need is a computer fan, a pair of magnets, and some glue. I used this fan (https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00080G0BK/ref=oh_aui_search_detailpage?ie=UTF8&psc=1). I just removed the metal guard from the back side and glued the magnet to it. The ends of the screws hold the flask the right height above the fan for everything to work perfectly. It's not the prettiest stir plate but it works just as well.

u/DNedry · 7 pointsr/Homebrewing

You need a stirplate!

I made one very cheaply from these things:

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00080G0BK/ref=oh_details_o04_s00_i00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001KUWM3C/ref=oh_details_o04_s00_i01?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Edit: And 1 washer, as long as it fits on the inside of the fan.

Edit: Here is a video

u/Piffles · 5 pointsr/Homebrewing

I'll give you my amazon build. It's $10 less than a comparable one from StirStarters, and only requires you to have a wall-outlet to USB adapter (Or for you to plug it into a computer when running.)

Box

Fan

Magnets

Stir Bar

The fan has a speed controller, you just need an adhesive to secure the magnets to the fan, and some way to shim the fan up in the box so the magnets are closer to the top of the stir plate. I just used cardboard.

If you have a powerful enough magnet, that cuts off about $5 in costs. Or if you can create your own enclosure you may be able to save.

u/Doll8313 · 5 pointsr/xboxone

/u/JustOutrageousX , buy one of these and then plug it into the back of your Xbox One. Set it off to the side of your Xbox so it pushes hot air out the front. If that is the only place you can put your console then I would highly suggest doing this or finding a method to get heat out that small area.

u/FrancisPants · 4 pointsr/reptiles

It is an adjustable near silent fan that doesn't buffet. My cresties terrs smell like old bananas and jungle sometimes. I decided to do something about it. I keep their stuff very clean and these fans clean up the air for us. Here's the link on amazon if you buy 2 you can get super saver shipping....

http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B00080G0BK/ref=mp_s_a_1_1?qid=1377299237&sr=8-1&pi=AC_SX110_SY165

u/paidhima · 4 pointsr/homelab

Unless it's a very warm environment, I don't think so. I had mine in an unconditioned room during a NY summer. It gets quite toasty, but I haven't had any problems. That being said, I didn't like the temp and purchased a USB-powered single 80mm fan (thermaltake I think). It's a neat little thing and even on low (completely silent until you're within a foot of the fan) it cooled the device until it was barely warm to the touch.

EDIT: this is what I use

Thermaltake Mobile Fan II External USB Cooling Fan - Us by Thermaltake http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00080G0BK/ref=cm_sw_r_udp_awd_sI1ltb0538GTA

It sits in there behind the ps4 and since it's a PC fan by a good manufacturer it's designed to run a long time. And it has speed control.

I have 5. One for each gaming console and 2 for receiver.

u/zoahporre · 3 pointsr/PS4

I use these

You can turn the speed up and down as needed or as noise allows. They are very durable, I still have one of my old ones I bought for my ps3 back in 2011.

For personal reasons, I am leaving the hobby. It was fun while it lasted but now my lackluster hardly-used equipment needs to go. This community is so positive and helpful for the up-and-coming homebrewer so I'll feed into it. If you want any of the equipment below all I ask is for you to pay for shipping (or pick-up if local), and if you want to shoot me a few more bucks feel free. Just put it to good use and don't let it collect dust like I did. Most of this stuff is probably not even worth the shipping but here's the list:

  • 3G glass carboy
  • 16oz Star-San
  • 2x 1G glass carboys
  • 2x airlocks and bungs
  • hydrometer
  • refractometer (Brix/SG)
  • 5G plastic bottling bucket (no lid) (Northern Brewer)
  • Parts for a MLT cooler conversion (minus bazooka filter)
  • Crowns (silver metallic/black 'B')
  • 5L Erlenmeyer flask and .5" stir bar
  • This fan
  • Cheap (but effective) vinator
  • Buttloads of unlabeled brown bottles (12oz, bombers, some with branded glass)
  • ~1# Irish Moss (not sure about viability, ~1y/o)
u/Fenix159 · 3 pointsr/Homebrewing

Heres the fan

That covers most of the parts. Speed control is already there. Box plus magnet(s) and you're there.

Edit: I actually did a lazy DIY post using that exact fan too.

u/wavemaster61 · 3 pointsr/hometheater

get you one of these! and plug it in to the usb port on the back of your marantz! you could cut holes in your stand or just put it back there out of sight to move some air.

u/MSUBREW · 3 pointsr/Homebrewing

Here is a photo of mine.

I used:

  • 12v pc fan
  • 2 rare earth magnets
  • 6v power supply with ends stripped
  • wood box from hobby lobby
  • 1 large washer
  • 1 stir bar (smallest at LHBS so I think 3/4")
  • 1 large (1.5L) wine bottle

I used "mighty mend it" to glue the large washer to the pc fan center, and glued the magnets on the washer with different poles facing up. I spliced the power wires and attached them to the wiring of the pc fan. I used screws to attach the pc fan to the wood box.

If you are looking for a simple, cheap way to do it, buy this fan on Amazon for like $11 and use a usb charger from an old cell.
u/ExtremeHobo · 3 pointsr/hometheater

For people with less professional or cheaper setups, I use this one as an alternative. You can cut a hole in the back of your TV stand and plug it into the USB port on your receiver.

I used this computer fan,

And this box, the lid is a little flimsy so I left the fan's mounting screws long enough to support the weight of a full 5 liter flask.

Edit: if you're in the U.S. and would like I could send you the magnets I used and a stir bar. The magnets I used came in a 10 pack.

u/Mephiska · 3 pointsr/htpc

You could also get a couple of these guys and plug them into the HTPC so they only run when the system is on, or get a powered USB hub for them to run all the time.

u/TastesLikeBurning · 3 pointsr/hardware

Here's how I cool my modem/router. Many routers have at least one powered USB port on them these days.

I bought one of these USB cooling fans to cool an old laptop I had. I think I paid about ten bucks at Frys for it. Used some nuts to put some space between the box/router/modem to give it some airflow and plugged the fan into the routers USB port. Stays nice and cool. I thought I might need to drill some holes on boths sides of the router to get effective airflow over the chipset, but that hasn't been necessary. The small vents on the sides and bottom of the router have been enough.

I'm with most of the other commenters here in wondering why most networking equipment doesn't include even the smallest of fans from the factory to help improve the performance of the device under load and increase its longevity.

u/oldlinuxguy · 3 pointsr/selfhosted

A little air flow couldn't hurt. I would put one hole on each side of the cabinet for intake and exhaust. On the intake, place a mesh or filter to minimize dust etc. On the exhaust side, I would just use something like this: https://www.amazon.ca/Thermaltake-A1888-External-Usb-Fan/dp/B00080G0BK Inexpensive and relatively low power draw.

u/Diabeticon · 2 pointsr/Homebrewing

It looks like it might be the USB to 3-pin that comes with this fan.

Source: I used that fan in my stir plate and it looks like that, too.

u/Doug2590 · 2 pointsr/Homebrewing

I just finished mine today actually. Crazy easy man- Just get a computer fan and some magnets. I bought a fan that already had a potentiometer, used gorilla glue to stick a washer on the fan, and the magnets are attracted to the washer enough to not budge.

Here's the fan: http://smile.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B00080G0BK

I had the same issue in my CC-100H

I added one fan and it resolved all my issues.

I also ditched the Butler and went with Sensorpush sensors as I found the Butlers to be wildly inaccurate.

u/The_Ethernopian · 2 pointsr/Homebrewing

I built mine using this: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00080G0BK/ref=oh_aui_search_detailpage?ie=UTF8&psc=1 and haven't had any issues. Most starters are at its lowest speed setting.

I bought this and put it in there. Just need to add a USB to standard plug adapter and it works great to get air circulating.

Cheap and easy stir plate!

  • Found the fan at my local tech store for $12, and Amazon.com has it here: http://amzn.com/B00080G0BK
  • One washer was $0.45 from Rona
  • A pack of ten 1/2" x 1/12" neodymium magnets was $2.31 shipped from China
  • Screws and nuts were ~$5 from Rona
  • The craft box from Michael's was ~$4.

I had some Krazy Glue from a previous project on hand, but it would cost around $3. Total cost: ~$25!
u/exileonmainst · 2 pointsr/Homebrewing

I bought these ones from Amazon. They're currently $5.60 and Prime eligible. I stacked 3 on either side and they work really well. Word of advice: wear gloves when supergluing them. These little suckers are super strong and when you're trying to neatly glue them together into a stack, they fly out of your fingers and glue smears everywhere.

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001KV38ES/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o09_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Also, if you want to make things even easier on yourself, get this fan from Amazon for $10.99. It's cheap, USB powered, and has an adjustable power setting already, so you don't need to do any wiring. Just remove the grill and glue on the magnets. You can then make a box, or just stick it between 2 big books or something.

I ordered a tiny USB powered fan on Amazon I plan on putting behind my switch and I'll leave the gate open.

u/Bargoss · 2 pointsr/hermitcrabs

As Spizam said, there seems to be a sweet spot, and if I keep my humidity below 85% the glass is always clear. I also have this small computer fan suspended inside my tank with suction cups and fishing line, which gives the crabs a slight breeze and also helps with glass fogging and keeping mold growth on my wood parts inhibited.

u/nickmv5 · 2 pointsr/Homebrewing

Another great option, if you don't feel like going through the effort of a fully-DIY, is this Thermaltake fan.

I use it on my setup (let me see if I can find a link to it), and it simplified the build a good bit, for minimal price. You can find em on eBay w/free shipping too.

Edit: Here is my build using the Thermaltake fan.

u/PenPenGuin · 2 pointsr/DIY

Very neat, I might have to try this out.

Might I suggest looking into the Thermaltake USB Fan as well? As a plus, once fruit fly season is done, it's actually a nice desktop fan.

u/Ciguard · 2 pointsr/cigars

Took the two bottom shelves on mine . Threw in a glass top humidor at the bottom to keep my Cubans in and stacked my full boxes on top of the glass top. My other loose sticks go on top drawer. Using 6 60g 65% bovedas in the cigador and 2 62% 60g in the glasstop (because it's just so easy ) Also threw in this fan in the back somewhere running 24/7 and haven't an issue with humidity yet and the humidity and temp is almost the same all around . Also plugged the hole at the bottom where humidity can escape from .

u/jakl53 · 2 pointsr/Homebrewing

It looks like I have a defective usb fan. I bought a usb fan for use in a stirplate. It has a variable speed control knob which appears to have quit working. It is currently stuck on one speed. I decided to get the box setup anyways hoping the one speed would work. It doesn't and I need that speed control back. I will drop a link at the bottom of the post of which one I used. Anyone have any idea what went wrong? I think it's just a bad knob. But is there something I can replace it with? The knob is just two wires by the way.

u/JustPandering · 2 pointsr/Homebrewing

I built this for about $20 (not including the erlenmeyer and the stir bar).

I got the cigar box a while back at a second hand store.

Here's the USB powered PC fan I used:
http://www.amazon.com/Thermaltake-Mobile-Fan-External-Cooling/dp/B00080G0BK/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1381376532&sr=8-2&keywords=usb+pc+fan

I chose a usb fan so that I could power it with an android usb phone charger and not screw around with splicing wires.

Here's the magnets I used (just needed one though):
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00B1M37MY/ref=oh_details_o00_s00_i02?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Aside from that it just took a few odd nuts, washers, and a bit of superglue. I had to bore the hole in top of the cigar box because the box turned out to be a bit too thick (sorry Pepin Garcia!) to get enough attraction between the magnet and the stir bar. I think I might have had better luck with stronger magnets or a different stir bar but oh well.

As someone suggested I first glued a washer to the fan so that I could move the magnet around a but to find the sweet spot where it didn't shake too bad then I glued the washer in place.

I used the long bolts/nuts that came with the fan to attach it to the lid (you can see the bolts in the first picture). Between the top of the fan and the lid I had to add washers to keep the fan from rubbing on the cigar box.

That's pretty much it. The fan has a variable speed control but I get a small vortex on the lowest setting, and higher settings throws the bar off the magnet.

Now I just need to wait for my soda preforms to show up so I can start saving a bit more yeast after I use the stir plate!
http://www.amazon.com/Soda-Bottle-Preforms-Caps-30/dp/B008MB1QNY/ref=sr_1_1?s=industrial&ie=UTF8&qid=1381377304&sr=1-1&keywords=bottle+preforms

I got the idea for using the soda preforms from here:

edit- pick one of these up, plug it into the back of your monitor and set it up blowing over or in the back of your amp. The fan has fully adjustable fans, I use two of them for my entertainment center and they've been working with no problems for years.

Based on my setup, you need;

Decent thermometer

Auto Siphon & tubing

hydrometer

wine/beer thief

carboy or bucket for fermenting + rubber stopper & blowoff tube

bottling bucket w/ spigot

bottling wand

bottle capper + bottles & caps

I recommend 10 gallon kettle, I regret getting only 8 gal.

mesh brew bag sized to fit your kettle. Useful for both BIAB and batch sparge brewing.

Optional but very useful;

10 gallon mash tun (square or round cooler + steel braid/false bottom + brass valve) I regret only getting a 5 gallon. Easy home depot built.

DIY stirplate using adjustable computer fan + magnets + stir bar and a flask (I pull it off with a 1 gallon glass jug)

vinator

Fermentation chamber with temp controller!

u/Z-and-I · 2 pointsr/Homebrewing

Is it this one? I have that and it works well for me. I actually have to use it at the lower end of its range or it will toss my stir bar.

u/LukeWarmCage · 2 pointsr/Homebrewing

> but this is almost the same price you'd pay.

$14 for a USB fan with speed controller

$4 for magnets

$0 for a cigar box.

$8 for a USB power supply if somehow you don't have one in 2018

so 1/2 the price, assuming one has zero parts at home.

u/discordantT · 2 pointsr/SpaceBuckets

For fans I avoided a lot of the wiring (at least on the bucket lids for exhaust) by using adjustable usb fans and plugging them into a 1amp USB wall outlet (like an iphone plugs into).

https://www.amazon.com/Thermaltake-Mobile-Fan-External-Cooling/dp/B00080G0BK/ref=sr_1_1?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1473291878&sr=1-1&keywords=thermaltake+mobile+fan+2

they push about 50cfm each and I can adjust them based on my temp readings. I did do regular wiring of a large intake at the bottom using the guides here.

As for lighting, on my CFL bucket I used one of these guys https://www.amazon.com/LimoStudio-Quality-Socket-Adapter-AGG882/dp/B0091HO0FY/ref=pd_sim_sbs_421_1?ie=UTF8&psc=1&refRID=0E6B9XSRB01D9H0K50VT

Just slaps right on the bucket lid, has dual on/off switches and avoids a lot of the wiring. Really depends on your budget.

u/sarcastic_clapper · 2 pointsr/Homebrewing

For less money than the two of them, you could get this which is what I use.

u/kzoostout · 2 pointsr/Homebrewing

A USB computer fan blowing up into the tower might do the trick. This is the one I use for my keezer. It's treated me right for a year and a half now. I've also read about people running their beer lines up the tower in a copper tube that extends down into the refrigerator part to act as a heat sink cool sink. As u/kneecapper was saying, anything to get those lines in your tower cool will probably help with the foaming.

Edit: the more I think about it, I don't think a dirty regulator would cause foaming. Maybe infected beer that tastes off (which could also lead to foaming if bugs got into the keg), but I don't think pure CO2 is very hospitable environment for most bugs, so I'm not sure if they would grow in the regulator. If your foamy beer tastes off, then I'd point the finger at the regulator.

u/inibrius · 2 pointsr/techsupport

you'll want to double check that. My Antec case fans all only pull power from the 5v, both the ones powered by the mb and the ones powered via molex to the psu. And wiring that up to USB would be a matter of seconds. I just noticed that ThermalTake has a series of usb powered fans that highly resemble standard 80mm fans, that might be a starting point.

u/britjh22 · 1 pointr/Homebrewing

I built mine, and that was part of what made it fun. This fan + a hard drive magnet + a cigar box from a friend + some wood + extra usb phone charger I had sitting around.

u/dawalker33 · 1 pointr/Homebrewing

I built mine using this fan. It has built in speed control so no need for extra parts other than a USB power source. I just used and old iPhone AC adapter and stuck the fan inside a small cardboard box with a small hole cut in the top for the magnet. Total cost was less than $15.

u/OrangeCurtain · 1 pointr/Homebrewing

Have you made a stir plate yet: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00080G0BK/

u/wizzard21 · 1 pointr/cigars

Thanks for your feedback! I went ahead and ordered two of these fans and will power them through the drain hole out the back via usb if needed. My significant other is already pissed that I have it so I don't want to test her waters by running wires out the front.

Any pictures of your setup and I assume they are working well for you?

u/crazyrawkr · 1 pointr/cigars

Basically what I did was got this fan and connected it to this timer

I didn't use the cord that came with the fan, instead I got a DC cord from Radioshack (you can probably find something cheaper online). I cut the DC plug off the end of the cord, ran that through the drain hole and connected the wires to the fan and taped everything up with electrical tape.

I sealed the drain hole with insulation foam and then covered that with electrical tape for good measure!

I hope that makes sense!

u/BielStok · 1 pointr/cigars

i use this fan it has a flat usb cord so you dont have to drill through the back but it still holds its seal. also it has a variable speed control i jyst leave it on the lowest setting

u/Bug42 · 1 pointr/PS3

Mine was doing the same thing as well. I sent it in for repair, and a year later it started happening again. I tried everything. The thing that finally worked was this. It is a USB fan. My PS3 was getting to hot where it seats in my entertainment center. I have not had any random shut downs since putting this behind my ps3, and letting it run.

This may not fix your issue, but it may help, and it is a lot cheaper then sending it in for repair.

u/andersonmatt1125 · 1 pointr/Homebrewing

Or you can just buy this and two magnets. the fan already comes with the power supply, and speed controller. All you need to do is glue two magnets to the middle of the fan, and it's a fully functional stir plate for $12.

u/musictheorist · 1 pointr/hometheater

I used a very similar fan in my setup for a while. The one I linked has adjustable speed, so you can prioritize sound and necessary airflow. I plugged it into the front USB port on my Denon and just wrapped the cord underneath so that it was barely visible. If the receiver was on, it powered the fan automatically, so it worked really seamlessly.

As for cooling two levels, I'm pretty sure it would not work well for that without a large opening between the two levels for airflow. Maybe show us a pic/sketch of the shelf setup?

u/Bultreys · 1 pointr/Surface

I've also been considering this issue over the last day or so and will be trying a slightly different approach. Rather than blow air into the vents I'm going to apply an 80mm variable speed USB powered fan to the rear top right (where the case heats up significantly) using suction cups, blowing a decent volume of air directly onto the area.

I'll be travelling for four months and think this will be easy to carry and apply when I feel like "Steaming it up" (edit: I deserve to be shot for that pun) and am optimistic that when combined with OS optimization (process culling) and CPU undervolting that the throttling can be contained.

u/LittleHelperRobot · 1 pointr/Homebrewing

u/imnotbillyidol · 1 pointr/homelab

If you've got a spare USB port, this exists. Haven't tried it myself though, and there may be cheaper elsewhere: https://www.amazon.com/Thermaltake-Mobile-Adjustable-External-Cooling/dp/B00080G0BK

u/themikelee · 1 pointr/Homebrewing

heres the one i used

its double the price now but still cheaper than a stirplate you'd get anywhere else. I made a couple little mods on it. replaced the screws with some longer bolts to raise it up a bit and added some spacers under that "grill" looking thing to keep the magnet from sticking to it. I'll send you some pics of the whole thing if you want.

u/Chalmun · 1 pointr/PS3

If it's in some sort of cubby and feels warm, you can get a decent and cheap USB fan to circulate air. I have this one and it works great.

u/whyisalltherumgone_ · 1 pointr/Homebrewing

Definitely for me. I'm not sure how difficult it would be on your part to offer it with and without, but that would probably be a good option to provide also.

If this helps you this is the fan that I used and seems to be the most often recommended one for builds.

http://www.amazon.com/Thermaltake-Mobile-Fan-External-Cooling/dp/B00080G0BK/ref=zg_bs_3015416011_3

So at $16 without the magnets and the precision that your product would offer, you can see why a $20 price point would be appealing. Let me know if you need any more feedback from a consumer point of view.

u/Chitties_6941 · 1 pointr/cigars

No, maybe 1 degree if that. I have a small fan in the bottom on a super low speed that circulates the air though. This one if you're at all interested.

u/J33Pair · 1 pointr/BBQ

Been following the iQue since its development and release. I too would love to hear about anyone with experience with one.. I have to admit that I have the Stoker (best Christmas present ever). Stoker kills the BBQ Guru. Love the reporting ability the Stoker has, allows for smarter cooks. I needed a bigger fan as well, the 5 cfm didn't supply enough air... so I got this fan.

I have the same setup in my cabinet. I used a bunch of USB powered variable speed fans so when the device comes on, the USB fan turns on. I have the speed turned down so the fan noise isn't noticeable.

Here's the fan: http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00080G0BK/ref=pe_175190_21431760_M3T1_ST1_dp_1

There is a 120mm one as well if you want that. I found some info on forums online, seems like a lot of beer brewers have made a magnetic mixer with it before. You could probably find a tutorial. Seems legit.

Cool thing about this is that you can use any USB phone charger you have laying around to power it.

You need to hook up a few of these babies. Find out how you can sink in the variable setting to your speed in the game. Will probably need some output interface coded.

This is the exact one I'm using. I got it in-store at Fry's Electronics, and it was on sale at the time. http://frys.com/product/5442979

Amazon has it for a tad cheaper atm http://www.amazon.com/Thermaltake-Mobile-Fan-External-Cooling/dp/B00080G0BK

Basically any USB powered fan should be fine. I have the PS3 placed vertically, with the USB fan resting on top to help blow hot air out.

So other than style, what differentiates your product from the myriad other USB powered fans on the market? It looks cool, but at the end of the day it looks like it's just a case fan inside an enclosure with an adapter for USB power. What makes your product better than something like this or like this?

I've been using http://www.amazon.com/Thermaltake-Mobile-Fan-External-Cooling/dp/B00080G0BK/ref=zg_bs_3015416011_15 in my wineador for awhile now. It works great. I have it hooked up to a mechanical timer to run for 30mins every 2 hours. I almost never have to mess with the humidity.

I like these

Thermaltake Mobile Fan II Adjustable Speed External USB Cooling Fan with One-touch Retractable USB power cable box for Notebook Laptop Desktop. A1888 https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00080G0BK/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_YN-jDb61DE7QR

I have one for each person in the house. Adjustable speed is really nice, you can dial in the exact noise/breeze you want. I've fallen asleep with one of these plugged into a battery bank, blowing from my head down across the couch.

Sleeping without A/C in the south really sucks. Having a fan makes it suck slightly less.
