Keep in mind that most of the better ones let you remap stuff like the fn keys with hardware switches.

Yeah keycaps can be really expensive. I payed way too much for mine for the pok3r...

Regarding the Thinkpad Keyboard. Check out their desktop versions. They have wired and bluetooth versions of the new keyboard layout that is now on every thinkpad. If you prefere the old style, like everyone, there is a desktop version of that: https://i.reddituploads.com/bb96393762f849c7b5807603187f92f0
I have the newer one with bluetooth for the couch and I actually really like it: https://www.amazon.com/ThinkPad-Compact-Bluetooth-Keyboard-TrackPoint/dp/B00C32FWJC

Awesome thank you.

The screen matters for me a lot since I will be programming a lot on it and if I get the surface pro I will be using it with this: https://www.amazon.com/ThinkPad-Compact-Bluetooth-Keyboard-TrackPoint/dp/B00C32FWJC/ref=sr_1_1?keywords=ThinkPad+Compact+keyboard&qid=1554647646&s=electronics&sr=1-1

The sleep part is real bummer though and also I am not really interested in the touch screen though, just the portability.

Nobody's even wanted to put a chiclet into a ThinkPad that has the 7-row keyboard, so you're on your own. It will mostly work, but some keys might not. You can try fooling about with the EC mod.

So I take it no one uses the ThinkPad Compact Keyboard or X1 Mouse?

I use TypeCover for most of the time, but when I do serious typing and when I have access to a power outlet, I use this: http://www.amazon.com/ThinkPad-Compact-Bluetooth-Keyboard-TrackPoint/dp/B00C32FWJC

For a desktop keyboard there are many, many better options IMO, unless you absolutely need the trackpoint (though at a desktop why wouldn't you use a proper mouse?). For a portable kb it might make more sense, although it's not exactly svelte. I opted for the bluetooth Thinkpad kb for travel, which is much more compact:

For the record, I have far too many keyboards, mostly mechanical and including a black IBM M13 that has a trackpoint and is loud as hell!

Edit: it's not on Lenovo website. They only have the wired one for sale.looks like eBay it is. Going for $80-90 used. That's a fair price if it's as solid as a regular thinkpad keyboard is with a bit better build considering it's a stand alone product.

Tryng to find it on Lenovo's website, but their keyboard section is down for maintenance. I got a sneak peek and they removed 1 keyboard and seem to have some sales going on for the 1st page I saw. I'll update with OEM price, because I want one too.

Had to look this up... Wireless Thinkpad Keyboard Amazon... 3rd party sellers only...

If you look at my history you'll see that switching from a laptop to a tablet has been driving me crazy because I can't tilt the screen forward while I do my work using a keyboard and mouse..

Anyways I really like the Surface and want to make it work.. so I'm trying to find options to improve the ergonomics.

This is a picture of me using the Octa Monkeytail while on the couch. I like it so far.. There are a few things it can't do.. Like the suction on the back has to attach to the bottom middle of the tablet, the very middle won't work since the stand slat will leak air and the top has the cameras which mess with the suction. Wrapping it under my legs and having it stand tall seems to work like a charm.

Typing while it's propped against my legs on the bottom but banked forward is nice.. That's a much more efficient angle and by propping it against my leg I get stability and my hands free to type on the on screen keyboard.

I'm going to keep trying it and see how I like it. I'm waiting for a Lenovo Bluetooth Keyboard to arrive so I can test that out with it. It just sucks to spend over $150 for accessories to improve. I'm figuring these accessories are a good investment and that I can continue using the tail with any other tablets I buy in the future.

Using it this way even feels a little Zen...
